Weirdest find

I found a coin/button?? down in Long Island on the adt hunt, and knew it had some letters on it but did not know exactly what it said. It is a large copper disc bigger than a large cent and has an impression on one side that almost looks like a sheild. This impression is why all the other guys down there thought it was a button. But I'm still not convinced. Well this thing has been bugging me and I have been cleaning it for a few days now. It is very green underneath a thin brown crust. I started with soap and water and a tooth brush, and moved on to boiling peroxide and using a cotton swab after soaking it in the peroxide bath. This helped, but not enough. So now I have it in olive oil and it seems to be bringing out some more detail. But let me tell you this thing is weird. It is not fully legible, but this is what I have so far.

Side of coin thing with the stamp in center-
modera lendeat+vs

Other side-
petrvsudgportv

Now these are big bold capital letters that go around the outside of the coin thingy. These letters are all consecutive except wher I have the space between the modera and the lendeat. There is more but haven't cleaned it up enough yet and not sure if it will. Would be very interesting to hear your guesses. I have a feeling this thing has some significance to it, although you would think it would have been made out of some more precious metal like silver.

Sorry pics are not the best

Couldn't get anywhere with Google on it, but it definitely looks like a coin or at least a token. I would concentrate on early Dutch, Spanish or English (maybe even German) coinage around the 1600's or earlier. When you finish cleaning it, that will be a great piece!! Congrats on it. Maybe someone with better knowledge of early coins that traded here will be able to help.

I'm pretty sure that it is a coin from Portugal. Petrus aka. Peter is a kings name, there were several of them from Peter II to Peter V. If you do a search on the online auction site eb**, keywords Portugal Petrus, you will get examples of coins like it. I found a gold coin that had the same shield on the back, and the copper coins have a similar shield. Hope this helps, good luck.

Ok, I found this site that has a very extensive list of the older portuguese coins, it takes a really long time to load the page so be patient, there are a lot of pictures. I got tired of looking through them, but if you do, I'm sure you will find your coin. http://www.rrnvmmvs.com/gallerymonarchy.html

I think jj its right on. The language is latin so you can substitute the v's for u's and you might be seeing some of the letters wrong but either was I think its portuguese because of the Petrus name, a latanized version of peter.

Thanks guys for all the time put in. Yes it is Potuguese. Now just have to email that guy from that site to get an idea of a date. The exact coin is not on his site or any other. This leads me to belive it is a little older because most coins on these sites start in the 1700's.

Cool find !
