What are your thoughts on having a DD coil as stock

For me its great. I hunt relics in central Va. which has some of the worst iron minerals in the world. DD coils lose depth in good ground and will not discriminate as well as a concentric. Most folks may have been better served with a stock concentric coil. What are your thoughts on this subject? I feel some of the problems detectorists have with the V is the wrong coil for their soil.
 
I agree...especially for the V3. I think they should drop the D2 and include the 4x6 shooter along with the a spider version of the 950 in the package.
 
I am a newbie to the D2. I must admit it is an adjustment for me, having used concentric coils, and a small footprint (4x6) DD coil.

I am having a lot of problems pinpointing with the D2 (partially due to the high sens. of the All metal), but I am getting better. The jury is still out on this coil for me.
 
Presently, White's makes quite an assortment of search coils for the M6/MXT/DFX/Spectra V3 class:

** a sub-4"X6" Shooter Elliptical Double-D
** a 6
 
I dont like it on the V3 but works better on the Mxt, I like the 5.3 better. WOODCHIPHUSTLER how does the V3 and the 10DD perform in the hot VA soil? Going there in 2 weeks been trying to get an answer to that question for a while. Thanks Andy

Still experimenting with it. Like all other VLF and multifreqs you must lower gain, lose the disc, and manual ground balance. In hot ground I use my TDI prototype. I use GB pulse detectors there. Bring it though.
 
I think the DD coil was the best choice for the stock coil. 950 is too mild (for mineralized soil) and doesn't separate enough. ( I think one of whites main objectives with the machine is recovery speed) 5.3 is too shallow. I have one and I will use it A LOT but a poor choice for best overall coil. Super 12 (which I heard it was almost released with) is too big. Not just for weight reasons, but again for separation. I've been using it last few trips out and getting DEEP coins but I have to find coins with no trash nearby. I find it hard to pinpoint with the 12 because nearby targets pull me off dead center and I slightly miss the coin. The garrett pinpointers deeper range has saved my butt in this respect.

I think it's important to remember that many of the places most of us hunt have been hit pretty hard and you need another angle to produce keeper coins, rather that be working skirts of the area, running deeper or a coil such as a DD for better separation and/or getting coins sitting on edge.

10DD = GOOD Nice of White's to include that with the Verizon.

BETTER= Would be a BigFOOT coil... LOL :-(

We used bigfoot only on the few club hunts (seeded) I've attended. Is that a deep coil? or is it as I always assumed, a clad/jewelry finder?
 
The bigfoot is used for coverage not for depth. Rob
 
The Bigfoot is good for at least 4 inches in depth as fast as you can swing the coil and at a slower pace, I have dug targets at the 6" level. I have used it primarily as a clad and jewelry coil on the beaches and sports fields.
 
I ran the Bigfoot with my XLT and 5900 Di Pro. (What a bummer to not have one for the V.) That one coil did wonderful things in just the change catagory alone! Paid for emergency gas to get home once!
 
Here in the Santa Cruz mountains of California, most of my hunting areas are highly minerialized...making a DD coil almost a "must" if one wants any depth at all.

I've found the 6x10DD (with the V) to be a much nicer coil to use on the V than the stock 10D2.
 
I run a bigfoot on my V, it doesn't overload with TX boost, got it on Ebay. Depth is about 3-4" and my machine and I haven't quite figured out how to see past 5 inches with the regular coils. Its a lot of fun to use.

If you really like the BF, maybe consider picking one up on ebay. If yours doesn't work on your machine you can always sell it, maybe even for profit if you get lucky.

Yes, some of the VDIs can off, so I guess if you're big on discrimination then it could be annoying. I don't pay as much mind to the VDIs as most people I think because I'm still a "Dig it all above 10" person with an attempt to ditch bottle caps screw caps, and big items. I hunt in a lot of places where there could be gold and I don't want to miss anything at all. (I ditch bottle caps by only digging dominant 22.5 above 40 though the other thread on 22.5 possibly being dominant in some conditions has me rethinking this)

The one weird thing is that sometimes the coil pinpoints off the front half and sometimes off the back. Still, I feel like for running along on sports fields and just sweeping up surface stuff, its a really fun and light coil. For days when I want to try to look deeper I'd use something else.
