What does Metal Detecting mean to you?

New member
For me, it's the exciting discovery of something of historical value first and monetary value second.
When I go detecting, I temporary forget my problems.
I enjoy the weather when it's good and enjoy meeting people whom are interested in metal detecting.
The exchange of comments and ideas between our forum members helps one to be better with this hobby
and make new friends along the way.

I agree,It is the historical value, and the pondering of what days were like back around
the date of the coin.

Well said. I feel like a miniature version of 'Indiana Jones' on the verge of a great discovery or not so great discovery.
My wife thinks I'm crazy, but what the h---.

Nicely said...I agree 100%. Ever since my Terry passed away I feel I need to be alone a lot and this is my way accomplishing something that still makes me feel good. Loneliness is something that is not always bad.

i just love everything about it i love the recovery and the research i love the comradship with you guys cause if i have a problem i know i can put it on here and get an answer usually the same day the one thing i must add is that i have lost over a stone whilst metal detecting and i feel so much fitter i can defo swing the etrac for six hours straight with the large sef coil and do not get tired my legs are defo stronger and i feel more vital the bad thing about it is i am ADDICTED and think i might need counselling because i am looking for that special find and when i have found it i will want another and so it goes on oh and i have the greatest detector and so that is a bonus hope you are all enjoying your personal journeys happy hunting

how do you describe the feeling of seeing some "moonshine" in the dirt. :clapping: i love the history....the "what if"....the "what might"...i love cutting a promising hole....the peace, the focus....nothing else is on my mind. really my finds have no monetary value at all, i would never sell anything, so the value is that its my treasure, that i found....i think we all must have a little pirate blood in us too.

I've kept everything that I have found whether it was a coin, piece of jewelry, rings, tokens, toy cars and
other misc. items. My wife tells me to get rid of the junk items, but I just can't do it because there's a little bit
of history with each find.

Sometimes I just sit on a log and ponder what was going on at the spot I am in, especially when it is remote...

The plat maps just indicate it is part of this family's farmland, but for whatever reason, it was never actually farmed...

I can see the ruts from the horses and wagons... look at all these huge old horse shoes I've found...

So many nails in small pockets scattered all over the site...

Maybe this was a barn site... maybe a livestock auction spot...

See the old fenceline where the livestock traveled, as the ground rises just outside the line...

Wonder what that person was building that was using this very old hammer head to pound these square nails...

Or how this lady looked who lost these silver changepurse edge plates engraved with initials...

Wonder how these people lost their Spanish silver or large cents or hard times tokens...

I imagine this one very old, massive white oak tree witnessed it all... wishing I could see through it's "eyes".

You said the the 2 magic words that everyone else thinks when they unearth a long past memory,,,," I WONDER" I started doing this in 1971 with a 20 year break and I still have EVERYTHING that I found and will never let it go.

Well said because I try to imagine the same thing. On the other, I found a $250 Seiko watch in a very narrow strip
of park grass between a sidewalk and the street curb. How can a person lose a watch like that only a foot away from a main street.
This watch was about 6" down in junk and re-bar nearby. Last year I was using my Safari with a small 4.5" x 7" serf coil to find
this watch.
So I try to imagine how this person (woman's watch) lost it. Was she in a fight with someone or ?

This is what came to my mind when I think of metal detecting and why we do it and what it means.

Why We Search

Why do we swing the coil
As we walk along the grass
Back and fro as a pendulum
As we make our careful pass

Is it to find untold riches
To make our searching pay
Or simply to uncover things
Brought back to light of day

Our treasures are not of a kind
The world would seek to grasp
We seek only to enrich this day
By preserving things long past

What Is It You Have Found?

What is that sound that broach my ear
The ring of coin so crystal clear
Is it silver or pray be gold
Of a time long past of days of old
It is more than that if truth be said
Payment for sustenance for a family

Every outing is a chance to find something new that has been hidden from human eyes for dozens or hundreds of years. It's a time machine and a chance to be outside and enjoy the outdoors, visit places you'd never go and talk to people you wouldn't talk to otherwise. Every trip is an adventure.

Just about everything has been mentioned. I might add the stress relief. It puts me in a different world.
And of course I love the chase, the hunt.
You never know what you might find.
I keep the finds, costume jewelry and misc odd pieces in a jar and let my grand children choose what they want when they want it.
My grand daughter loves to treasure hunt the jar.

There is certainly something to be said about "putting yourself in another world". When you place the headphones on, you temporarily focus on just interpretting signals. Constantly hoping to hit that "magic" signal and unearth something someone last handled over 100 years ago.

The finds for me are secondary. Sure, they are a reminder of what that hunt and dig felt like. Personally I enjoy hunting someone's yard and presenting back the finds to them. I like their smile when they also realize the fact they are holding something of value that was worth even more a long time ago.

I love the fact that I get to dig old things of how it was long ago. I get to be the first one to see and touch and become the new owner of something that was the things of daily life. Things like old coins, old jewelry,150 year old cast iron kettles, porcelain dishes and pans, old watering buckets, always leading me to sterling silverware, and when you find things like that you know that they spent alot of time picnicking out.I always dig the old trash out because that's where alot of people frequented. And when you start finding lots of silver coinage, you better be digging old trash. What I mean is old trash means old coins and jewelry because these were the things that were commonly lost. I know that has brought me 7 gold coins. All but 1 is a 2.5 $ coin. One is a 5$ gold piece.I hope this helps inspire you in your hunt. What I learned with my ELITE was that gold coins sound like trash at dept. Gold is heavy. It sounds really soft. What helps me find out if it is possible gold I change my coil speed.I recently found 4 gold rings,I will be posting pics and the way I found them.

Huge connection to the past.....Who fired this three ring mini ball? did it hit a person? was it used in the civil war? ect........

When you see the 3-ring mini ball and other weapons or parts of weapons, you conjure up dreams of what
really happened to these soldiers or common people about 150 years ago. That was a terrible time in our nation's
history. I had a great, great, great,? Grandfather who had a twin brother and one fought for the South and the other
fought for the North because they lived near the Pennsylvania / Maryland border so I sometimes think what would
have happened had they met face to face. I grew-up in Pennsylvania.
