What No Longer Minted Denomination Coins Have You Dug ?

E-Trac-Ohio

Well-known member
I'm posting this question in the E-Trac forum because I know there's a lot of long time metal detector user's here - some with 10, 20, even 30 + years in this hobby.

I really like the no longer minted denominations of coins - the ... 1/2 cents - 2 cents - 3 cents - half dimes - 20 cents, etc,
So far I've been lucky enough to find an 1865 Two Cent and a 1857 Half Dime.

Just wanted to ask .... what types of these and other the no longer minted denomination coins have you guy's found ?
How often have you heard of them being found ?
I'm newer to this hobby - a little over a year - but I don't remember seeing a post from anyone that found a 20 cent coin yet ?

I found an extremely worn silver 3 cent in the river with my Excalibur.

I've been detecting for almost thirty years now and I found all except two ( a 1/2 dime & 1/2 cent) of them in the first five years of detecting. I found the last 1/2 dime about 4 years ago and the last 1/2 cent 2 years ago. I attribute finding so many of them so early/quickly because back when I started there were a lot fewer people in the hobby and a lot more places that were not "hunted out", and there was much easier access. For instance I found all but one of the 1/2 dimes in the same old park. This is the same park where I've found hundreds of silver coins and over 100 large cents, not to mention hundreds found among other people that I know. Access to good places to hunt, and the picking are much scarcer now. It was not unusual back when I started to go out hunting for a day and find several dollars in silver seriously, especially at places like old bungalow camps. Those were the days :)

I have found a two cent piece see my avatar, the day I dug that my hunting partner dug a half cent and a week later he dug a two center himself

Dang. Thats some great finds there Altamaha. I got myself two of the 2 cents but other than that can I count all the cut up once cents ive dug?

1/2 cent (2)
1/2 dime (1)
two cent (4)
three cent (1)

Top of my list to find......
tree shilling #1
Gold coin #2
seated / capped .50 / 1.00 #3
Major key date # 4
20 cent pc #5

I have only been detecting for four years. I regret not having started sooner.

Half cent = 0 (darn!)
2-cent = 5
3-cent silver = 5
3-cent copper/nickel = 3
Half-dime = 8
20 cent = 0

10+ years of detecting.

1-1/2 dime 2-two cent and 1-twenty cent been detecting a little over ten year's. Regret not having started sooner.

Me...

2 Center >> NOPE!
Half Dime >> Nope!
3 Center... >> NOPE!
20 Center >> NOPE!

Half Cent >> YES! 2 of them this year...

Great going, finding two 1/2 cents in one year paul, It took me over 25 years to find two of them as they are quite elusive.

That 20 cent piece is quite a rare find Al, only minted for four years, congratulations!

1805 Draped Bust Half Cent! Found it last spring. It's in rough shape but IT'S MINE!

Probably my best find to date... That rusty spot you see on the back is where a big or square nail use to sit. The coin was about 5" down. I'm getting back into detecting after a short break to pursue my other passion photography. So I have to learn this new E-Trac :)

Just dig an 1844 half penny Canadian Bank Token.

I only hunt during the winter months. No snakes, ticks, mosquitos, or annoying kids on playgrounds. On my last hunt this past April I took my Etrac to a mid-1800's yard that I had literally hunted to death with my Garrett over 10 years or so. The very first signal was the 1870 IH at 5", then a few feet away the second signal was the outstanding 1784 quarter-reale at 8". I was so excited I decided to quit after only hunting 10 minutes or so and take the coins home to show the wife. I left the Etrac running and pushed it in a straight line towards my truck, and then Wham!, there's the SL dime at 6".
