What's The Best Coil For Old Cellar Holes ?

E-Trac-Ohio

Well-known member
I know this topic has been talked about many times before - but with the newer coils on the market - I wanted to ask what smaller coil you thought would be the best for the old cellar holes ?

I'm using a 10x12 SEF now - but I'd like to get a smaller coil that would be easier to swing in tight spaces and work well at sites that have lots of junk metal. I heard a lot of great things about the Sunray X-5 and the SEF 6x8. I like the Sunray design better because of it's " closed design" - seems like the Sunray wouldn't hang up on small branches and short weeds as much as the open double D - Pro & SEF's coils. In the past - I also read that some people really like the Joey coils - for some reason you don't seem to hear that much about the Joey coils these days.

So ... if you could only own one small coil for your E-Trac - for cellar hole hunting and other sites that are loaded with iron - what coil would you buy ?

Thanks in advance for your replies ! --- Mark

I love my 6" Excellerator for that job. And anything to do with underbrush. Since it is a solid coil no stubs get hung in it. also a touch more coverage too.

I'll second that, and the price is tough to beat on the Excellerator also. I have 3 SEF's (6x8, 10x12, 12x15). I use the 6x8 often in trashy areas that are mowed grass. The Excellerator is my go to coil anywhere that is trashy with stubble of any sort. An open coil getting caught mid swing on a dead sapling stump is very irritating.

Hi Mark
I use the X5 and have had good success using it in iron and trash infested areas . The 5 inch coil behaves like a champ giving good separation between targets . Also being small makes it easy to maneuver amongst brush and undergrowth . The Etrac and the X5 is a deadly combination in tight places.
