Wheats, Large Cent & Spanish Silver!

Went out with my nephew Paul today and did some door knocking, first house we got permission was very junky although we did dig at least 6 toy cars and many beverage tops. Moved on got permission at an 1855 house, owned by a delightful couple who more than made us welcome. Well I have to admit all the keepers were Pauls and amazingly they were all found in on area about 10 feet wide and 40 feet long. I got some clad but Paul only got these 4 coins. An 1855 Large Cent was his first good find followed by two wheats 1919 and 1919-S. I was retrieving a clad dime from a hole when Paul walked over to me and said "I think I got something old and it looks like silver". I looked at it turned it over and saw the two pillars and said "My gosh this is Spanish Silver...a Reale!" After cleaning it up we saw it was a holed coin and of course the hole was through part of the date. It is a Carolus IIII with a Lima Peru mint mark. A closer look at the date and checking dates of minting tells us it is a 1798! I thought it was neat too that the Largie is 1855 the year the house was built and it is in such good condition it might have been dropped when they were building the house! We had a great day and even though I did not get any keepers I was thrilled to see a Spanish Silver come out of the ground! Thanks to Neil In West Jersey for his help.

Not the greatest pictures my camera was dieing as I was trying to take these so they were sort of rushed.

That is an awesome hunt....2nd Reale this week pulled out of Indiana/Ohio....who would have ever thought it?

Pictures were plenty good Tony! Congratulations to Paul on the finds and thanks for the story too!

Fantastic finds - a BIG congrats on the Spanish Silver ! :clapping:

So Impressive!

What a good pal you are to share in the joy and let us in on it

Do you know what numbers the Reale came up on the Etrac?
Do you know how deep the Large Cent and Reale were?

Regards and HH

I think Paul said they were about 6 to 7 inches deep. He said the Largie was sort of jumpy and it was on edge in the hole but 12-44 to 12-45 on it and the Reale came in at 12-43 which I account to it being so thin.

Thanks for your kind words!
