Side by side comparisons of all the top end machines on a multitude of targets/conditions both planted an otherwise.Let each brand assemble a team and then pull factory sealed machines out of random dealers stock and let the show begin.It would be very interesting and educational in many different ways.
Talk is cheap, actually free on this forum but the cards would be on the table for all to see with this sort of test.

I'd love to see it. You would of course have to have different categories, maybe out of the box stock depth comparisons, recovery speed tests, EMI situations, Mineralization Tests etc. After that, you would have to have some more hardcore tests with real guys that have real hours on each machine, and use it as their main detector. I think the out of the box tests would be easier to do. To have the machines pushed to their limits, you would have to have a real select group of guys whose authority and ability with the particular machine they are using couldn't be questioned. IMHO the ultimate test of a detector would be measured by its ability to produce digable signals on extreme fringe targets. Like you said, it will probably never happen unless we all funded it ourselves through findmall, and then maybe had a contest to give away the purchased detectors. It could be done though...and videotaped to boot

Yea, the companies would never have a direct competition with each other as they would have too much to lose. Some of the companies would be eating crow and nobody in the industry would want their own company's equipment to look bad.

The closest thing we can have to a shoot off is when guys compare signals on the same targets . The truth still remains though that one detector can't do it all and even if there was one overall champion " Top Dog" not everyone is going to be in agreement with the results anyway .Another factor would be even a detector of a same model might not be as" hot" as the one that preceeded it coming of the assembly line .

Realistically it can't be done due to too many variables. The best one could ask for is individual testing of the top machines for each ones use in their ground, hunting styles, desired targets, hunting ability and so forth. If a test could be pulled off I think it would just reinforce what we already know about the high end detectors weak and strong points.

Have 2 tests. One with just iron disc out and the other with everything below the nickel disc out. Use what ever coil you want but nothing above 11".

Neither of your tests would be fair to some detectors like the V3i which excel in the lower Non Ferrous and high Ferrous zones for small gold and platinum jewelry, like chains, necklaces and bracelets. Most advanced V3i hunters use no discrimination. How many areas of the country should these tests be conducted because a test in Missouri will be much different than in Northern California.........Just to many variables.

Closet thing I have seen is the annual GNRS hunt. Each manufacturer does not go over the same target, but the each form teams, all have the same areas to hunt and they hunt and get points for items within the scring guidelines. It's not like mentioned above, but very interesting.

All the detectors can see single targets in clean ground at medium depth.

If the tests focused more on discriminating various targets at maximum depth in the heaviest forms of trash, then I would be more interested.
