Taliaferro County Ga. Nice old flat buttons and my first ball button. No coins but hopefully will find one soon. Flat nails around so imagine log cabin was there. Wish I knew how to find the dump and privy sights. Pretty good for couple hours sweat

Any signs at all of a chimney or foundation?
Looks like you are in woods, and I would think some sign of a house site would be there.
Looks like you are in the right location never less and have made some great finds.
Hopefully the ground is pretty clear and you can search it good.
Looking forward to seeing what else you find there!

Not yet some chimney size rocks spread about. Beautiful spot on ridge flat spot above small year round spring. Found square nails and many iron signals I’ll dig later.

Looks like a very old site based on what you have found and not being much sign of a house site left.
I imagine any coins you come across are going to be very old too.
Good luck and keep us posted..

This well is at a different homesite about 150 yards away. I have found mid late 1800 s artifacts and a 1909 wheat and 1905 barber dime. Can anyone guess well era looks older than 1900

I would guess that well is older than the 1900’s too… the ones I have seen around some house sites are not even rock lined, and most likely after 1900.
A lot of work went into not only digging that well, but also lining it with rocks!
Looks like two great sites you have there.
I’m always wondering if the chimney was dismantled from one older house site and used else nearby.
Lots of questions and mysteries surround old places like this. I find it interesting.
Just curious… what is the approx, diameter of the well at the top?… it looks rather small.
I have found a couple holes that are rock lined that look like wells, but not very deep and rather small in size.. maybe wells that caved in?..

Bout 36” across very deep did drop a magnet but no iron. Probably 40’ deep I imagine it’s filled in some 2

What i found was only about 20” in diameter… not sure they were…they were only about 4 feet deep.
I’m wondering if they were used to keep something cool underground .

Looks like a site worthy of many return visits. Look at the topography and figure where you would want to put an out house for privacy, ventilation, and ease of access from the main house. I understand they could’ve been a half a mile or more in a downwind direction.
Of course, a lot of work went into that well. I imagine there is probably not a spoil pile visible in the area? There would’ve been a lot of trips back-and-forth.

At the well sight there is old rock piles and I have found most of the old pot belly stove scattered about. Also bricks I think was inhabited till 1910 or so due to the 2 coins I found. Found no flat buttons there but d I d find a toe tap. These flat buttons are downhill due east from this about 150-200 yards. Lots of exploring to do. As I bet this ridge had more than 2 homesites. In the late 1700s early 1800s did they build privies or just do the business in the bushes?

I have seen some references to privies in the 1600s.
I have to wonder if those rock piles were actually the spoil piles and most of the dirt has been washed out and downhill.

Going back Monday to continue the hunt. I found all 7 buttons in probably a 20 yard by 20 yard area on the flat area on the ridge above the gullies and spring. No other artifacts which was strange no coins or buckles. Gonna start making my way uphill towards the old well 200 yards away. Hopefully more goodies to be found.
