Changing Cleaning Grip pad?

Goldfinds

New member
Does anyone know how to remove the grip pad?

I would like to clean it and put it back on. Don't want tape, I like the grip the way it is, but its get pretty muddy and needs to be removed and cleaned or replaced.

Think you have to take it apart to remove the grip. I brush mine off with a grout brush after ever use. It's about a year old and is still in good condition.

Hi Scott,

I don't know if this will help. Here is a link to a discussion on the "removal" of the grip. Maybe some info you can use. Personally I taped mine up with electrical tape(put seran wrap on first) and I have to say, it held up and is still holding up extremely well.

Thanks NebTrak, I did search this forum for any posts relating to changing the grip before I posted the question, but nothing came up. Good find.

I watched the video but didn't like the way the grip went on, there must be an easier way than using soap and water, and an hour to put the new grip on.

What I do is wrap the grip with wound tape, the stuff that they wrap around bandages. It sticks to itself, does not add bulk to the grip, is inexpensive and keeps the grip clean. I get mine at Walmart in the pharmacy use the 3" size. Runs about $5.00 and has enough on it to do two grips.

I took mine off . All you have to do is remove the arm cuff, then screws in the side of the battery housing area ,then remove the stand that keeps the machine off the ground. put couple screw back in take the cushion off wash , dry reinstall.

Figure out a way to clean it whether you can take it off or clean it left on the machine. After you get it clean I highly recommend this product to seal and preserve your grip to like new condition, in fact I like the feel of it much better than the foam grip and is WAY easier to clean, just wipe it off. It's not bulky at all. Nashua brand Stretch and Seal Silicone tape from home depot. This tape is non-adhesive and will only stick to itself. It will easily remove later and save wear and tare on your foam grip. I love this stuff, JJ

that silicone tape looks good.
i have had one of those $5 "replacement" tennis racket grips over the foam since day one - in over a year of hard use on plowed fields and in the mud - it looks the same as the first day installed.
it's a leather like material that has a very cushiony feel and can be wiped clean in a second with a damp rag. I have a big hand so it adds some additional diameter to the grip.

are hard to break but...

If you can do it this is a good way to hunt. Only put your left hand in the dirt, hold your digger and your grip with your right hand (or oppisite if you're left handed). When it is warmer I only wear a glove on my left hand and use it to scoop the dirt from the hole. I use my lesche digger with my right hand and hold the grip witht my right hand and the detector, grip and all, stays pretty clean. Now and then I will need to use a damp cloth to wipe it and that is all it takes to clean it. It is a good habit if you can get into it... and it works very well. There is realy no need to put both hands in the dirt unless you're digging a hut or something...

Anyway, I just wipe mine with a damp cloth (terrycloth) and it comes clean.

I use Tennis racket grip tape found in sporting good stores. Great grip and replaceable.

Someone borrowed my Tejon once and put something like that on the grip... really those are great because they add a little extra padding and make the gandle slitghtly larger... sometimes good, sometimes bad but they feel and look nice, and the foam handle reforms it's original smooth shape after you take it off. I think I will pick some of that TR grip next week and add it to all my machines... this is a good thread.

I have also always put anti-glare screen protectors (cut to fit) on the screen of all my machines but I have been thinking about putting it on to cover the whole face on a couple of machines to see how well it will work with the touchpads. I may even clean the face of my Tejon, remove the knobs and try putting a screem cover on the whole face. If it works it will keep it clean and be much better than a rain cover... I hate those things... I may try covering the whole box, front, sides, and back on a machine to see how well it will work. With "O" rings on knob shafts, teflon tape wrapped around the cable connection, (not on the threads but after connecting the coil, then wrapping a good bit of teflon tape around the whole thing.. a machine like the E-TRAC should be pretty well weather proofed. You could use teflon tape to wrap into the seam of a POD where the parts come together. That and the connector. Tape a 'saranwrap' around the end of the part where the battery inserts and the HP plugs.. a little tape on the HP cable end of the plastic wrap after twisting it arounf the phone cable and tape it on the battery holder... cover the speaker with a little tape and the ET/EXP should be pretty much rain proof... I wouldn't dunk it but I bet with the coil connector well wrapped with teflon tape.. water running up the shaft wouldn't be a problem... however, cut small pieces of sponge and stick them down into the top of the upper shaft for some insurance and you should be good to go... anywhere and without a cover. I wonder if they make balck teflon tape?

I too wanted to change my grip and got loads of ideas on covering it. There are lots of great things to cover it with but that is not what i wanted to do. As I understand it, the only way is to fight with replacing the grip or desolder it at the control housing. Not much else to try. When mine got not so nice looking....I just remove it and have been using it without a grip....someday I will find a better way to replace the grip.

I got really tired of trying to keep my foam grip clean.
I wrapped the grip with Electrical Tape about a year ago - very easy to clean - much more comfortable than the foam grip - looks good - the best 10 cents I ever spent !

After watching the video the wrapping looks much more apealling to me! I have a lot of experience in replacing grips on bicycles, worked in bicycle shop for over 35 years and have installed many foam pads on drop bar bikes. We have used the soapy water technique and also hairspray inside of grip makes it slippery to go on and when dries makes it stick. That would be tough to do on E-Trac, the other thing we do is take the air compressor we use for inflating tires and use a very thin blow attachment instead of the normal air chuck and blow air under grip while slipping it on, it glides it on just like an air foil. You would probably have to have two people to do this on the E-Trac, one to hold the handle and one to do the installation. I don't see why that wouldn't work it has done the trick at the bike shop for years.
