" Coil Not Detected"

BartOscar

New member
I was 7 hours into hunting on properties with old houses here in San Diego. My first target was a 1907 barber dime. Finds kept coming until my display screen stated "Coil not detected". Kinda funny wording but never funny when one is out doing what they love and it comes to a quick halt! I did everything under the sun to see if I could fix the problem on the stock coil. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or hear from someone that has had this problem. My first big problem with the CTX after 3 years. Thank you.

Peggy

Hi Peggy
Unless it is something simple like a loose connection it would be time to call Minelab. Perhaps about a week turnaround for a replacement. Are you still in warranty? Do you notice any exposed wiring along the length of the cord all the way right to the coil?

hit it with some contact spray--Deoxit if you are feeling extravagant--done.

As GK said above, swap coils with someone, and if it recognizes the new 'borrowed' coil, then do a close inspection of the 'bad' coil wires, especially near the stress area at the coil. Bend that webb looking rubber area to see if wires are exposed inside. If all that is good, check the other end of the cable where is connects to the control head. If no pins are bent, no corrosion, then spray it with the cleaner and apply some contact grease or spray. Turnaround is really quick with bad coils as they do not repair, they replace them.

To be fair that was sprchng that suggested it.. A good suggestion too!

Any update?

The update is I sent the coil in (still under warranty) and Nadia at Minelab who has assisted me before was great. I received a brand new coil in a timely manner! So far my issues have been resolved quickly through Minelab.

I had the same problem last week. I was on the Outer Banks beach detecting when the coil not detected message kept popping up. This happened for both my 11 and 17 inch coils. Both coils were less than 2 months old. (one had gotten cracked, the other had started to give the coil not detected message so I replaced them.) I could not believe that both new coils would be bad. Stopped by the Ace hardware in Corolla and got some CRC Marine QD Electronic Cleaner, which boat people use to clean the contacts on their switches. Sprayed on the coil connector in the box and on the coil itself. Problem went totally away. Best $10 that I have ever spent. I probably did not need to get a new 11 inch coil. Try it, it worked for me.

I have had this twice now.

Last time was last month.

Luckily each time it was under warranty.

I inspected everything but could not see any visible problems though the first one I found water inside the cable when i opened up the lower end.

I did hear early on there was a bad batch of chips that caused this.

I sent my coil back for the same problem and was told a new batch of coils would be in stock some time in May... Minelab was nice enough to send me a used coil on loan to use. Just received an email that USPS is sending my new coil on Monday. Gotta love GREAT customer service!

I have to agree Eddie, and funny name by the way...:) Minelab has really missed very little in the way of making sure everyone's CTX is up and operating, from the look of the posts I've seen for awhile now. While we may be a smaller slice of Codans business, it's sure nice to know the company has our back when something DOES go wrong. At 2k plus a shot for these machines, the "little guy" feels much better when the support is there!

mine does it all the time-it's moisture--or just the contacts becoming coated--hit it with some deoxit--done.
don't panic.

like i said--sorry. if you send your machine in at the drop of a hat you wont get much hunting in this season.
