Compared E-Trac vs SE...then Pro coil vs 10 x 12 SEF coil. Hmmmmm:surprised:

Well I went back to the pounded sandy area at the park I've been hitting the last couple of outings.
This time though I wanted to do some side by side testing of the pro coil and the 10 X 12 SEF coil on the E-Trac.

As most of you know I love the 10 x 12 SEF coil on my SE...but was curious to see what it would do for me on the E-Trac.

I went back through the sand pit with the 10 x 12...and after 3 TEDIOUS hours was able to flag 3 targets that I felt could be coins.

Now keep in mind that I was just here a few days ago and pounded the snot out of this 20' x 20' area with the pro coil on the E-Trac....and found 5 wheaties and the 11" deep silver quarter.
An interesting fact to point out about that hunt was that I did flag a few of those coins before they were dug. I then got out the SE and popped the pro coil on it to get a fair comparison. The SE/pro coil combo was not able to hit all the coins.

I'm truthfully not surprised at finding 3 additional targets with the 10 x 12 that I apparantly missed with the pro coil...but I needed to see why I missed them.

I popped the pro coil on and headed to the 3 flagged targets. Over 2 of the 3 targets...the pro coil did not give me a "dig me" signal. In fact I didn't get much of a good signal at all. If those two targets weren't marked and flagged...I doubt I would have dug them.

The third target I did get a decent signal on with the pro coil ...so I flat out just missed it the other day. MY fault on the one...but not the other two. :)

Now out of curisoty I repeated this exact process with the SE w/ same coil combos...and the results were identical. The SE with SEF coil was able to hit all 3 targets...but the SE with pro coil would only hit one of the 3. Hmmmm. :)

Okay...now it was time to dig and see what the 3 flagged targets were.

First...the target that the pro coil was able to hit like the 10 x 12 SEF did. It ended up being a wheatie tipped a little at the 8" level.

Second...the flagged target the 10 x 12 hit that the pro coil didn't hit well. It ended up being a wheatie at 10" next to a small piece of aliminum crap.

Third..the other flagged target that the 10 x 12 hit that the pro coil didn't hit well. It ended up being a 1923 merc at 9" deep.. and pretty much on edge.:super:

Pretty much found out the same results with the E-Trac that I did with my SE. I like the 10 x 12 coil over the pro coil. It is what it is...and to me it's pretty clear. [attachment 151822 smiley.gif]
It just works better for me at my sites and the settings I run. I'm not saying you fellers' would have the same results...in fact your results might be completely different than mine. I know the results I got though.... it's happened on two different machines....and I wanted to share the results.

All of this being said...I still feel the pro coil is MUCH better on Darrel's E-Trac than it was on my SE. It is very smooth on the E-Trac...almost weightless....and I will be putting some use on it too.

Very good report Bryce and I will be trying another 10 x 12 come spring. And one point that I am sure you are very well aware of  Not all coils of same brand and model are created equal.I am in no way trying to make light of your results but would like to see done or help do a similar test with 2 or 3 coils of each you tested and even others if a person had the time and coils available for such a test.I guess my first taste of the 10 x 12 that was faulty left me wondering.I do have the 8 x 6 and am very impressed with it by the way,Ray.
PS I have known a couple of guys in the past that would go to one of the bigger dealers with their machine and try out several of the same coils and buy the one they thought was better.

Thanks Ray...and actually I have done just that...testing with more than one of the same coil. My hunting buddy...the Yeti...has also done some side by side testing with me and his 10 x 12 SEF coil. Both of our 10 x 12 coils give the same results for us. He prefers his over the pro coil too...but we are both in IL ...so that might be a factor. We have both hunted in St. Louis and done well with the 10 x 12's too though...so it's hard to say.

You have a good point about sometimes coils might not be equal. My first goaround with the WOT coil was not great. I bought a used one off of a forum member and wasn't really crazy about it.

My second goaround with a different WOT though...man it was a killer coil. Guvner and I both hunted strictly with the WOT coils for a few hunts in a row and did very well.

Chris...I've never compared those two side by side. Just not enough time..and I just like to hunt for fun as often as I can.

This comparison was one I needed to do for myself though. I have always felt the 10 x 12 made the SE click for me nearly 2 years ago...and was just curious as to how the E-trac would respond with it.

Can't say the SEF coil is much deeper than the pro coil if it indeed is deeper at all...but I know for sure that I like the sounds the SEF coil gives me on deep coins.

Great post Bryce, thanks for putting the time in .
Harold

Thanks Harold.

I told myself after putting the long hours in doing the 2 different Sunray coil tests...that I was going to enjoy the last few hunts before the ground totally froze on me...and just hunt for pure fun. This was something I needed to do for myself though..and I'm glad I did.

Between what I found out by putting in those long hours...even on Christmas eve fieldtesting the Sunray X-12....and what I already knew about the 10 x 12 SEF coil...I then sold my pro coil right here on the forum. It's a great coil...and I will use it on Darrell's E-Trac some because it came with one...but I know what works best for me.

Great comparison on coils and machines. I was thinking about getting a 10X12 SEF. Your test helped me make that decision easy. Thanks for taking the time. HH :minelab:

you just don't know until you try one. One thing I do know is that you RARELY see this coil offered for sale used...so that speaks volumes about the performance for other hunters too.

Thanks for the response...and good luck to you.

After reading about the SEF 10 x 12 coil for the past couple of months, should arrive tomorrow.Unfortunately I am on the road and it will be a couple of weeks to try it out.
This forum is getting better and more useful each time I read it. Thanks Bryce for the valuable time and effort you are putting into it.

Bryce that is a very much needed comparison for me and to many others I'm sure.
So what do you think? Are the bells and whistles worth the upgrade or do they help you any.?
I trust your opinion as do many others and I have been waiting for someone very successful on the explorer line to compare both then spill their guts whether it is good or bad.

I hope you wil respond with your further thoughts if you care to share them.

Thanks for your hard work and informative reports Bryce, I appreciate your efforts. HH
I prefer the 10 X 12 SEF coil over the Pro coil also.

May I ask what setting you used on the Etrac. ??

bone stock coin program:clapping: :crylol: with just 4 simple changes made to how I feel would enhance the performance just as I did with some on my SE.

1) switched from semi auto +3 to manual sensitivity of just 24. I got absolutely no depth until I did so.

2) maxed out the variability to mimic as best as I could...the deep silver sound my SE makes.

3) maxed out the gain for the exact same reason I do on my SE.

4) dropped the threshold to a just audible hum. (It seemed way to loud)

That's it my friend...everything else is factory preset. I felt it performed a lot like my SE...only much more calm and tame.

I still love the absolute raw power the SE has though  and have NO intention of giving it up. That same raw power is why a lot of people complain about. It is so powerful ...it's almost unstable until you get used to it.

I have no problems with the SE in the iron...and I already get some falsing and chirping from the settings I use anyway.

I feel I am at my best with the SE in iron...and that's where a lot of people don't like the SE for some reason.

I completely ignored the screen...the fancy little sensitivity bars (when is semi auto)...the flashing numbers...and hunted strictly by sound alone.

The only time I looked at the screen was when I got a decent signal and wanted to check the depth if need be. Most of the time I can tell on a deepie anyway just like I can on the SE...even though the gain is maxed. Still did glance at it some though if need be.;

Your more than welcome Mike...and thanks for responding.

Now...no more testing and comparing for a while. I'm just gonna enjoy some peaceful huntin' until the ground freezes on me.:clapping:
Been very lucky this far. I thought I was gonna' be done a few times now...but have still been able to find some spots frozen to only about the 3" level.

Hi friend. I appreciate the respect...and it means a lot to me.

I'll tell you what...I just responded to a few people on this thread and want to relax a little this evening.

I will put some serious thought into it and respond either later this evening...or tomorrow.
