found this button yesterday and it was covered with a hard black crust, only thing I could find to remove it was electrolysis, the back has rusted away, any Idea what it is, or where it is from? Looks like there is stars around side, I tried to get a pic best I could.

Anything on the back?

According to the Albert button book it looks as if it may be a General staff union officers button possibly a "M. C. Lilly & Co. from Columbus Ohio or maybe a "W.G. Mintzer/ Phil" both show officers buttons. Not 100% here but they look close the earliest reference is 1810 second change or order was ion 1832 they used these for several years. Hope this helps.. Nice find by the way....
