Etrac turns off! :(

banditicey

New member
Hello All
Ive seen this topic before and tried to find it but could not so..
On occasion when the coil hit side ways against a hard surface the Etrac turned off
Just today without hitting the coil against a hard surface the Etrac turned off and on?!
I will be calling Minelab tomorrow since Ive only had the Etrac for about six months
Any Thoughts?

Thanks and Regards

cant help with the problem as it has not happened to me BUT one things for sure you need to get it sorted pronto as you trip must be looming GOOD LUCK keep us upto date

switch etrac without coil and slightly shake, if its turn off check battery springs connection in etrac handle or can be something inside control panel. good luck

Try a different coil to see if it's a problem with the coil your using now - or the machine itself.

I had an abrupt shut down problem six months ago - called a Minelab Tech - he said clean the battery terminals before I decide to send it in - problem solved !
I took a very small piece of very fine steel wool and cleaned the light oxidation off of the two aluminum contacts that are on the end of the battery pack.
If your battery contacst look dull - just clean them this way - even if this isn't your causing your current problem - it could help prevent a problem in the future.

Good luck !

Thank you all for the suggestions and concerns
Minelab sent a mailing label and said turn around about 15-20 days
I'll try your suggestions prior to shipping
It is because I have a trip to England in September that I need to correct asap

Thanks and regards

I had a similar problem about 3 months ago. I was able to isolate the problem I was having to intermittent electrical contact between a couple of the individual batteries in my spare battery pack. The Etrac would turn off on its own when I picked up the machine-I didn't have to bump it or anything. I tried the factory Minelab battery pack and it worked fine, so I knew it was an issue with the spare pack. Once I found and corrected the connection problem (small piece of plastic from the exterior wrapping on the battery), the problem went away.

If you are having problems while using the factory Minelab pack, it could be a connection or solder joint problem where the battery makes contact inside the holder (or elsewhere in the machine). You might try the spare AA pack to see if the problem continues.

Another suggestion I remember someone saying was to drain the pack until the machine shuts off (from battery exhaustion) and then recharge for 18 hours. I'm not sure how effective this would be, but I thought I'd mention it. (I tend to believe it is more likely a connection problem than anything else.)

I hope you can get it resolved quickly. Good luck.

O.K.
You wont believe this
I sent out the Etrac today and the husband is leaving with our son on a 10 day trip (Sea Base Boy Scouts)
They will be on a sailing ship going from Florida to the Carribean
So he suggested I use his E trac while he is gone..Great
Went out tonight just to make sure it would work out and even with the same program on..it was unusable
Why... because his machine was "chatty" constantly and only stopped when there was a solid coin hit
I tried a different program, lowered threshold and volume and the "chattiness" stayed

No wonder he does not want to go out as much as I do and gets irritable
I don't think I can use it and believe it needs service

ANY THOUGHTS AT ALL

Thanks :|

Yea! Buy a Tesoro.......LOL:)

Is the sensitivity on Manual?

LabradorBob

It is on manual but he said when on automatic the Etrac is quiet?!

What does that mean? sensativity?

Thanks for caring

Of the four buttons down on the pad (lower left corner). The top and bottom button raise or lower your senistivity and the right and left button switch you from Auto to Manual. Just watch the left side of your screen. When your in Auto you can lower/raise the sensitivity (up or down button) 7 positions. (+3, +2, +1, A, -1, -2, -3).

When your in Manual you can lower/raise the sensitiviy (up or down from 30 all the way down to 1) 30 being the most senisitive and 1 the least (might be able to pick a clad quarter on the ground).

So when your machine gets "chatty" and won't settle down your probably in Manual Sensitivity and need to use the down arrow to lower the sensitivity until the chattering stops. UNLESS you just passed over a big underground electrical cable then you'll need to go off aways and re-start.

Sounds like your sensitivty (how much power your putting out) is just too high and needs to be lower or switched to Auto (right or left arrow).

After I clean my battery terminals, I put a thin layer of Di- lectric grease on them. Stops them from corroding.........NGE

Just tried your recommendations and it is a HUGE difference

You should know that I have been looking on Youtube Etrac and you and several others finally helped the light bulb over my head to shine
I am understanding "it" now and have really gotten to be fairly confident about pressing buttons and adjustments for the situation
I do believe if not for the help of you and others, this would not be the amazing experience that I am so excited about

Just wanted to let you and others know that the "chatter" is gone and all the advise was really helpful and did the trick
especially confirming manual and sensitivity
I also always noise cancel now and I don't remember what it was like before I did that and I will let the Husband know when he gets back and starts using his machine again..he owes me!

Mine lab has my machine and Ill let you all know how long it takes but the consensus from the forum and a experienced friend is the battery shifting so that foam on the back of the battery/door might have solved the problem but I know the Etrac will return the Etrac in Top shape

Thanks and Regards

Hello
Just want to update and close this chapter with the happy ending it deserves
The Husband returned just late Friday night and I am still using his ETrac because I am waiting the return of my Etrac from Minelab
Unfortunately, he has hurt his back and was not detecting during the weekend except that we went out looking for a "hidden coin" after our MD meeting this evening
The "hidden coins" are 5 clad dollars that are hidden in local parks and monthly clues are given to their location and when found the clad is replaced with a Silver dollar
Alot of fun and we do this yearly at our MD Club
Anyway, we ventured out to a Park with the fourth clue feeling fairly confident that we could find the clad dollar
Well, we did not find the clad dollar before dark but found a 1943 Merc and a wheaty with no date..amazing!
But what was really amazing was he was detecting without the earphones so I would be able to hear too and I dug at the locations he indicated with the pin point because of his back injury and he was just astounded at the lack of "chattiness" and all the while detecting he had a huge grin on his face and then he THANKED ME for getting the "chattiness" out of his life :)
No Really

Regards and HH

That was an easy way to get rid of the chattiness, if I wanted to get rid of mine, I'd have to get a divorce:stretcher:.......NGE
