Had to walk through some IL snow to get to the Barber shop...but it was OPEN

I had 3 or 4 fellers who wanted to get together over the holiday to do some huntin'...and the weather was in the mid 40's for two days. However...this was our first Thanksgiving without my mom...so spending time with my family was the only thing on my mind.

On Sunday though I woke up and needed to feel the peace and solice of having the headphones on. Problem was that there was a little snow on the ground...so I waited a couple of hours to see what the weather would do.:stars: Well by noon time...most of it had melted and the temp here climbed to near 40 degrees...so off I went. I'm sure this was my last long hunt of the season because of the falling temps and freezing ground...but if so...I couldn't have scripted it any better.:)

Slow...steady...patient...and concentrating on the sparse signals..is my type of hunt. Sometimes stuff pops out...and sometimes it doesn't.
At this park...that's the only type of huntin' left...so it's a good thing I enjoy it.:smoke: I've said this many times before...but it's no bull...many times this park gives up NOTHING...but this time was different.

I went there needing a "fix" because I know the hunting season is drawing to a close...and again went thinking..."just one more". :super:
I also went there needing just 2 more injuns...and one more silver coin to hit year end totals for both that I never thought possible because I'm hunting the same pounded parks I've been hitting for years.;) Regardless of that fact...I would have been completely satisfied finding "just one more" keeper.

All 5 of the coins that popped out over the next 5 hours were in the 8" to 10" depth range. I won't bore you with the "deep iffy warble" I heard while locating most of them because I have explained it before.

The most rewarding find of the day was the shocker 3rd barber dime that popped at the end of the long hunt.

I was ready to go home completely satisfied after popping out the second Barber (1892 DARN IT:cry:) from 9" down ..then a second injun from 10" down. However...I realized that this would probably truly be the last multi hour hunt of the season for me. Like a stubborn little kid...I decided there was only 45 minutes until dark...so what the heck...I kept on going.

Right before darkness set in.... I wandered right back to a 20 foot area by a big tree where the second Barber came from. I VERY thoroughly pounded this small area for nearly 2 hours previously... but it was getting dark...so I just settled in there.:look: At this point I couldn't even see the screen:shrug:...so I turned the light on...but it did no good. :veryangry:You know the annoying time of day I'm speaking of...too dim to see it...but also no help from the light because it wasn't quite dark enough yet.

I was hunting strictly by sound alone when I got a faint warble after a null. I turned directions and then got a null followed by a faint warble. It only repeated from two out of 4 directions...but when it hit...the deep warble sounded nice.:super: No way I pass this up...especially when it was less than 10 feet from where the second Barber came from.:smoke: Funny thing was... that I could clearly see my "swing" tracks...and footprints from where I had ALREADY been over this exact spot. Obviously my coil hit it from one of the two directions that it gave NO signal over as I described.

Anyway I dug a deep plug and got down 9" ...and the probe sang. I moved some dirt with my fingers and saw a big chunk of iron:rant:...but also saw the reverse of a shiny piece of silver sticking out next to the iron.:super: From 9" down...and with iron accross it...out popped a THIRD Barber Dime...1909.:yikes: The iron was draped right along the reverse edge as I have it in the picture...and you can see the rust stains along the edge as well. What a rewarding find. For me...it just doesn't get any better than that. It kind of took the "sting" out of missing a seated coin by just ONE year :bouncy:on the second Barber I found. If this was my last piece of silver this year....I'm okay with that. :clapping:

I hope to get in another short hunt or 2...because I KNOW there has to be a seated coin hidin' in this park. ...but if not...what a fun, rewarding hunt this was.:beers: Take care...and thanks for viewing.

leave some coins for the rest of us! The way you sniff these things out has me digging just about every signal. I am getting a lot of exercise but no where near the success that you have had. Apparently I will have to learn how to crawl before I can walk. Too bad the '92 wasn't an "s" but it's still a beauty. Very nice job Bryce and thanks for taking the time to post.

You did it again Bryce, some incredible finds. For some reason I think you will always find the deep oldies no matter where you hunt. Boy do I have a place for you to hunt if you ever get up this way.

This is a picture of the day after my four silver hunt in the upper 40's temps just North of you. You really lucked out Bro........and it is still coming down 24 hours later.

If that turns out to be your last hunt for the season ... well, you can at least rest SATISFIED that it was a good one.

Now it's time to get out that Mothers polish and get busy on that H-D and show it some love.

Who knows ... maybe mother nature will be kind to you and give ya another hunt or two in between the big freeze period.

We actually got a coulple of inches of ice/snow/slush in the yard this morning and it's still coming down ... the good thing is that it won't last long here though

Good Hunting
Mike

I am thrilled you had decent weather and got in some much needed
relaxation. Love the post and Beautiful Barbers and Injuns . I am
holding my breath waiting for your year end totals :please:

How did you know you weren't just getting a good hit off the edge of the iron? I've had several nails that gave a real nice repeatable 1-way (back and forth, sometimes repeating while rotating about 20 or 30 degrees) tone a few inches off center of a nail...every time I've dug, there was only a nail or some other piece of iron. I'd love to find a coin in one of those nail holes!

 You just might not make the winter without detecting. Nice looking at the coins you nudged from their hiding spot.

a couple of hours or so. No way I want to invite back that nasty head cold/crap I had for weeks:shocked: ...but a couple of hours will do just fine.

too bad Winter seems to be coming early this year. We had about 10" of snow here in Kewanee and it may be the end of my detecting until Spring. Maybe a road trip South will be possible.HH

just a nail mimicking a deep coin. Trust me...if you dig those type of hits...sooner or later a nice coin will be in the hole with the nail or trash.
I don't truly know it is a coin...and nobody could know that unless they can see into the ground. I do listen for one thing though that I feel gives it a chance of being a coin...and therefore taking a chance and digging it. That one thing is a MULTI tone warble...and not just a one dimensional sound or tone which indicates to me that it's falsing off of iron. I don't know how to explain it...and you just have to hear it and train your ears to listen for it. Is it fail proof?...no...but it has greatly cut down on the iron I dig. Do I still dig some iron?...YES:biggrin:...but many times I pop out a silver or injun hidin' in there with the iron.
Most of the iron falsing I run accross is a mono tone high pitch with only a slight warble...and I usually know I'm taking a chance on an iffy hit before I dig it. Many times when a coin is hiding in there though...I will get a more multi toned warble...and it waill last a little longer than the sound does when it is just deep iron mimicking a coin.
I consider either of those hits an "iffy" one...but I feel the multi tone warble I'm talking about has a much better chance of being a coin as does the other single toned sound I'm talking about.
As a rule of thumb though...on the 6" Excelerator...it's so precise that unless it pretty much repeated all the way around the hole....it ended up being iron about 90% of the time with me. It is one accurate...hot little sucker.
With the bigger coils it just comes down to how many iffy hits you want to take a chance on. The sound I explained that I listen for is the main tool I use when deciding on whether or not to dig those iffy hits.

suffer through my first attempt at cooking the Thanksgiving turkey...it was good to get some hunt time in.:detecting:

the Harley does look a little lonely sitting there collecting dust. The blanket over it isn't doing the job...so maybe a good cleaning and waxing is in order:clapping:

is already entering my mind. I hope to get another hunt or 2 in even if it is only for an hour or so. After that...I guess I'll have to "tough it out". The Harley can use a good waxing though:thumbup:

you got pounded with a lot more snow than we did. It did start again last night and is much colder today as well. I fear our IL hunting days are nearing season's end. Maybe we can squeeze in another short one though. You never know:detecting:
Take care my friend.
