Hit the country church again and buddy debate

Hi all, Hit the little church again for about 2 hours yesterday and found some more goodies. Also found a few wheats and the usual amount of clad. I have about 1/4 of the grounds to go yet. Also my hunting partner and I were talking about the fact that there was no silver found yet and we had a debate. I think seeings how this site is right off a main road I think it was probably stripped of silver back in the day like the seventies or eighties. He thinks the detectors were not good enough back then to find the silver. I do not agree I think the whites coinmasters etc. were good silver machine but might not have found the nickles and indians. What do you guys think?

Your probably right the majority of the silver is probably gone do to previously being hunted. I have found sites like that, generally you'll get the nickles a few Indian heads and the occasional deep dime or masked dime. They and there detectors were quite capable back then, but some left low conductors and chose to just find silver or hurried through to get the next 50 silvers from another virgin site. Hunt slow take your time if your finding Vs and IHs there is probably silver there to.

I had a Whites Coinmaster 4DB in the late 70's and found lots of silver coins 1 to 3" deep, so I am surprised if there is much left in the obvious locations.

i'm with you! i was one of the "strippers" back then, and yes they most certainly could, and did find "tons" of silver!
both 100 khz tr's, and the early v.l.f's..just sayin'

me too ! outrageousely good detector ran at 100 khz a "high frequency" tr
i could get down around 4" or so on silver and sometimes a little deeper!
loved the "weak" smooth round coin sounding "hits!.these usually indicated silver, and
was so enjoyable "poppin' silver with it!..just sayin'

i agree! if you are finding "quality" material like that, then yes a very real possibility of silver still there,
but deeeep!..just sayin'

I started out with the Whites Coinmaster in the 70's. My memory might be a little fuzzy after all these years but I seem to remember finding a lot of V's, buffalos, indians, and many silvers. Also realize that 35 - 40 years ago there were fewer pull tabs and a lot of the silver and other coins didn't have a chance to sink as deep as they are now.

Back in the late 70's and early eighties when the first VLF Discriminators came out I hunted with Whites 6 DB's and Whites 6000D and latter the Whites 6000DI Pro with Target ID. I also hunted with the Teknetic's 8500 and 9000, the first Visual Target ID machines. These machines were all very hot on Silver, not so much on nickles, but I found many Wheat's and Indian head pennies with them. One of their down falls was they were fast sweep machines, meaning you had to swing them very fast to get a target response and good depth. You had to cover the ground from several angles and make sure you over lapped all your passes.

I remember hunting a grass strip between the side walk and the curb on a street here in town and a guy came out and said he didn't care if I hunted but another fella had been over the curbs on both sides of the street many times. I continued to hunt and in that one block covering both sides of the street I found 14 pieces of silver which included, dimes, quarters and one silver half. Two things was really strange about this, first off I never found anything more then three inch's deep, and second off I never found one new coin, and no pennies what so ever. I can't imagine what this guy was hunting with that it would not pick up the silver coins especially them being so shallow. That one has bugged me for a lot of years. Rick IL

Great looking coins - the V is in excellent condition !

I met a guy that did a lot of hunting in my area with a White's machine about 25 - 30 years ago - he and and his buddy hunted a lot of the sites I visit today - they were very active in our hobby for 10 years - so they covered a lot of ground ! I agree with the posts above - they found most of the silver - but it seems like they missed most of the Nickel's. When I go to one of the sites I know they hunted years ago - I swing low and slow - pay attention - and sometimes I can still find some deeper silver.
