If you are wondering if your E-Trac is healthy you need to ...

plant a coin test garden to find out.You must make sure your soil is "sanitary" as in no foreign metals near where you bury your coins.
A silver dime at 6" and 8" is a good start.
I will state that my E-Trac in coins mode and manual sensitivity at 26 , stock coil, fast on,deep off, gain at 26,multi-tone conductive will hit a silver dime freshly buried in mildly mineralized damp compacted soil at 9" with a brisk sweep speed. It will give high silver tones and id a bit jumpy.Bump the sens. up to 30 and it hits quite well but we all know there are few sites that can be hunted at manual 30 sens. without a lot of noise/falsing.
After doing the above you think your machine is not up to par your best bet is to start by testing with a different coil if possible and go from there.

.
Thank You Ray,..It's always good to not get confident that your machine is always set the way you had it a month ago and to make sure you are not swinging at some ridiculous setting your not aware of. Again thank you for the heads up

If it is extremely mineralized you will get less depth with the E-Trac and any other machine with the exception of the pulse units.

I cant hit a freshly buried silver dime nor can I hit wheat pennies I buried 3 months ago with my etrac no matter what setting combination or disc I use. The penny is at 9 inches BUT I CAN get it with a different detector that is not a PI. Now why is this?? There must be someting wrong with my etrac.

Ray thank you for the advice. I hate to throw another twist out there....but i always wondered how other people think about this when they talk "target depth".....i planted my test garden coins in the spring, i measured the actual dirt level not including the grass. a month or two later i measured the grass depth after i had just cut it and i was suprised that the grass depth was 3" from cut tips to dirt surface. the coil would maybe skim the grass so the actual distance from my test coins to my coil is 3" further apart than when i measured the coins when i planted them. something to think about.....i mean, something i wonder about....when someone says they found a 9" coin, are they including the grass depth too?

If you don't have another coil to try, then I would seriously think about sending it in for a once go over.

Goldmanjace : Your machine should hit those targets in Auto +3 and factory coin mode. If you have set your gain at 26 and sensitivity at 30 and still can't hit the targets try a factory reset before you send your machine in. Good luck. HH :minelab:

Ok, it has been raining all day yesterday. Tonight I did a backup of the etrac and I did a factory reset. I loaded the coin program and auto +3. I then went to my test garden and NOTHING. Not a signal over the wheat penny at 9 inches. I even tried it in quickmask with the screen wide open and still nothing. I then got a copper penny and buried in a clean spot in the front yard at 8.5 inches. Same thing NOTHING, it just nulled over it even in quick mask. I then set it to deep on, trash hi and ground difficult, NOTHING. I then went around in the yard for fun and got a real weak signal 10/43 09/43 but real weak and it showed to be at maximum dept on the display. When I dug my plug real deep I got a faint signal in the plug I removed and this plug was max 5 inches deep. I then shaved inch after inch off until I only had one inch left and there was a dime that must have been there for 20 years. It had a patina on it. So this tell me something is wrong. I got a weak signal on a dime that has been there for years only 1 inch deep! I then airtested this dime with the same settings as I found it and I got a signal to 5 inches in the air if I swung the dime fast. Can someone tell me what the heck is going on??

Hi,
You stated that another detector would pick up your coins, but the E-Trac would not.
Care to say what other detector you were using ???

My etrac will hit coins from 8-12 inches, depending on your ground of course, setting, coil speed and knowledge. some coins depending if there on edge may sound like a whisper in your headphones.

I would think using raymo's settings and in clean ground you should hit those targets, I would just call minelab service and tell them what your experiencing
