Is my ETRAC busted???

My ETRAC seems to have depth issues... My maximum depth is ~6 inches and even then the signal is broken.

I'm not kidding when I say my ACE250 goes deeper than my ETRAC, over christmas my brother in law was using the ACE250 and got several deep hits the ETRAC wouldnt even pick up... Usually when he got a hit I came over to confirm it (since the discrimiation on the ACE250 sucks) and few times the ETRAC wouldnt pick up the hit... The frustrating thing is one of the hits the ACE250 got but the ETRAC didnt was a WWII sterling silver infantry combat medal at about 8 inches...

Most of the time I'm using auto set to +3 with the coin filter on and a standard 11" coil. I'm not sure what to do? Ive even started to think about trading it in on a Whites V3, overall its very frustrating.
 
Clean the coil, there may be sand under the coil cover. Also make sure the connection is clean and tight in the upper shaft.
 
I would say there is a definite problem
might be worth bringing it to the shop/dealer you purchased it from or consider the suggestions by forum members
and if there is no improvement you should send it in for repair
I have been at hunts where others had different detectors and hands down the e trac was so much better

First,you didn't specify which coins program you were using.
If you are using the coins filter,40 through 50 in conductive is discriminated out at the top R.H. corner.
This is where the medal would have registered. and Silver coins too!
There are two coins programs,One is:
User modes,(Down to select),(Right to select),(Down to minelab Modes),(Right to select),(Down to coins).
Then hit detect.,Choose left or right arrow to choose Yes.

The other is: Menu,Discrimination,(Down to select),(Right to select),(Down to coins),Hit Detect.
This second one has a lot more discrimination in the top R.H. corner,and would have caused you to miss a lot of targets.

I personally like the Minelab coins Mode,But the point is,That you need to remove the discrimination in the top R.H. corner
in either program.
This should make a world of difference.

The next time that happens press the mask button (to remove any discrimination except for iron).
Where was your sensitivity set? ... Auto? ... Use manual set as high as the area will allow.
See if that will do it.

I have heard of a coil problem (the pro coil) where the E-trac would not detect a silver dollar and all the tones were shifted up.
 
Very interesting let us know what you find out. I'm hoping you are just running too much discrimination.
 
Your ideas both seem rather extreme. Why not just send it in for service and be sure?

If you trade it in, that's not really nice for the next user if there is a problem that needs fixed. Plus, many things will be covered under warranty which only covers the first owner.

Buying a new coil seems like an expensive way to see if your coil is ok.

My suggestion (beyond the obvious sending it in for service) is to meet up with another E-Trac user in your area and check out and compare the machines, you can even try swapping coils to see if you have a coil problem.

Another thing that may be worth trying is a hard reset to set everything back to factory defaults and then see if you still have the problem.
 
I totally agree with Nick...... I think I would start out with a hard reset by holding down the power button. Then I would move along to checking connections. Also check your wires for damage. If you haven't had very many hours on the machine I would think under the coil cover would be clean but also double check. Then from there I would cross reference with another Etrac user. Labrador Bob may have been right with the way your discrimination is set. Make sure the whole upper right hand corner of the machine is open "white". After doing the hard reset this should automatically happen because it should be in factory coins mode. If none of this works then I would send it in for a band aid. Good Luck Joe
 
I have had that thought on mine also. I have dug many coins,tokens etc but only recall a small amount 3 or 4 that I know were about 6". The depth meter also is not very accurate. But it finds 0-4" stuff fine so now that we are experience arctic weather I sent it and the coil back to get it checked out. They will receive it tomorrow and hopefully find something.

Yup, you just described mine exactly.
 
In response to the 2 last posts, I had a sorta similar situation when I first started using the Etrac. I thought something may have been wrong. Actually what the problem wound up being was a mixture of me and my sights. There wasn't any deep coins where I was hunting like you so often read about on these forums. Also the part that was my doing was I truly wasn't going slow enough to really see what was under my coil. Just a thought but certainly may not be your answer.

Mine has trouble with coins at 6 inches, it works perfect on shallow items but after 5 inches or so it is terrible, I've seen my ACE250 go deeper than my ETRAC which I dont think should be happening.
 
ok well if i was you i would dig two 8 inch holes borrow abit of gold tied to string and abit of silver tied to string perhaps do third hole with coin i would run machine open with ground setting always in difficult as i have seen etrac not detecting silver when set in other modes write up the results make sure the batteries are not cold i know you said you were detecing finds shallow so batteries should not be your answer put deep on and give your machine its best chance if you still are not happy send it away but it is worth seeing if it can be solved first happy hunting to you all and a very happy new year

I plan on placing a coin in my back yard and trying different settings, unfortunatly there is 6 inches of snow on the ground right now... Its early January and we have already had snow twice in middle Tennessee.
 
looking at your latest post i want to let you know that i have been working with insulating my batteries in these freezing conditions batteries will reduce in power and this may be some of your problem i will let you know when i have done a few more tests keep the power up in batteries when you hunt that is when you are able to get out lol
