manticore

I have the Deus 2 and have hunted with it a lot. I got the Manticore and find that as I hunt with it I have been paying attention the the second screen. While doing this I have found more rings ( bling rings ), but I have found a 14 kt Gold ring with it also. I find that hunting with the Manticore and paying attention to the second screen it does make me hunt slower, but I am finding things I have left behind.

People just didn't get the handfuls of silver they thought they would Manticore deus 2 or legend some day they will make a game changer don't matter what you have now .
There all so close in performance the problem is what's left in the ground is not coming out easy .
I will swing the d2 till something catches my eye .lol. sube

I'm not so sure Sube. After hunting the same parks, the same area's, I did pretty good with the silver, Ihps wheats, tokens and old nickels with the 800 when I started hunting those parks in 2018. I would average 15- 20 silvers and a fair amount of other old keepers. Fast forward to Dec. 22. I bought a 900. The one park the only silver I got was a war nickel in Jan. of 23. The other park I got a 56 Rosie, a war nickel and a pretty nice shield nickel. I did find some clad and tokens from those two parks but nothing to post about. Next Sept. of 23 I decided to give the Legend a try. Good machine, but almost took a skunk a couple times from the park where I have found most of my silvers for this year. The other park I got a couple silvers but I didn't see enough in performance that made me want to head right back for another hunt. Dec. of 24 I buy a Manticore. Got a few silvers from local permissions. In the new year I started hitting the old parks. So far I've got almost 40 silver, 75 wheats, 4 Ihps over a dozen Buffs, tokens and a half dozen Vs. So you tell me, did I all of a sudden become a MD guru or is the Manticore doing what it was intended to do and pick out deep/masked non ferrous targets. I think option 2.
I have since sold the 900 and have the Legend up for sale. To me the 900 was a lackluster performer, the Legend IMO is a better machine but the Legend can't touch the Manticore in performance. For those who haven't read any of my posts, the parks I hunt were declared on life support by the old Mdr's that had been hitting them for 10 years back in 2018 when I started hitting them. So to see these kind of finds still coming out of these parks speak volumes about the Manticore. Good luck.

But you have the manticore now don’t you mark? How has it been since you got it in your hunted spots with those prior machines? Is the manticore pulling anything up that was left behind?

Pete, I answered but let me elaborate. All my silvers have come from these 2 parks, the majority from the older park. To include a Walker, a type 1 SLQ, 2 Seated dimes, 4 Barber dimes, a bunch of Merc dimes, 2 GWs and a half dozen war nickels. And all have been with the Manticore. The first Merc and the 11 inch Ihp were with Recovery on 4, the rest, I took a page from your playbook and was using Rec. 7. So far masked silver outweigh deep silver I have found. You have my number, when your ready to be humbled let me know. Just don't pick too hot of a day as I'm old and all I have to do is blink my eyes and I start sweating like a whore in church. Was it you that bought the Manticore for 899 ? Good luck. Mark

lol, it’s gonna be a hot one this upcoming week, I don’t think I’ll be going detecting after swinging a saw in the the bucket all day in that heat..Yea, I couldn’t pass that deal up, $899 was a great deal and curiosity got the best of me. Tracking says Tuesday delivery,,I’ve watched so many videos of that machine ,I was just being cheap,,had to many high end machines and it was hard justifying another grand or close to it. But I’m looking forward to getting it out, and I’m probably 40 min from you so I might come in down to Pittsburgh and give it a go. Thanks for the heads up Mark!

I know a lot of guys don’t beach hunt saltwater because your not near it but that’s a whole other way to learn your detector guys that do know more plain and simple about how the targets sound and react with iron.
The Manticore shines there for me
Mark

Hard to argue with these results…. You have done well with that Manticore,
Are you using the stock coil?
I am assuming these older parks you are using it
at have years of modern trash too?

fwcrawford. Good evening.Thank you. No sir, I use the 9in.coil and quite honestly I don't see me using the stock coil again unless I would get permission to hunt an open farm field. The depth with the 9 is quite impressive. I hit and Ihp at a good 11 in. down and an SLQ pretty close to the same. Silver dimes are no problem at 8-9 inches. As I commented on other posts the majority of my silver have been masked in one way or the other in the 4 to 8 inch. range. Using a recovery speed of 7 quite often the Manticore will give you a quick clean tone and number while in the masked zone. On the 800 my go to recovery speed was 4. When I tried raising it I would wonder if I was missing the deeper targets. Started at 4 with the Manticore but quickly realized 7 was getting it done. And I no longer worry about depth, at least in the areas I have been hunting. As far as trash, its mostly older, cantops that the can has rotted away on. Older pulltabs and a ton of rusty iron nails and bolts. These areas are grown over what I assume were part of picnic areas back in the day. I use ATLC in 5 tone in all metal. These parks are giving up very few coins these days. A 6 hr. hunt yielded me 3 clad dimes a Jeff and 2 memorials. BUT I did get 2 keepers. an 1892 Ihp and a Pgh. Transit Token. Had to work for the indian, it was deep down under a root and truth be told if the ground had been dry I would have given up. Ha ha. Just one, hundred year old coin, token or dateable relic makes my day so although no shiny that trip still a good outing.

Pretty impressive there Mark.
That IH was not only elusvie, but well protected under that root.
The reason I asked about modern trash is I was wondering how it does on coins close that type of trash.
Seems like others prefer that 9” coil as well.
Looking at that root reminded me of a signal I got a couple years ago around an old demolition site.
I got a high TID, but sounded iffy and like a big target.
I started digging and hit about the same sized root as you encountered, and the target was under it.
I kept trying to to dislodge the target and finally came to the conclusion it must be junk….i became more impatient in rooting around and finally managed to flip the target out from under the root.
I saw a big silver disc fly out and it was W. L. Half dollar and luckily did not have a scratch on it!
How I managed to get it out without damaging is unbelievable!
What caused the iffy signal was a rusty nail laying against it.
Thanks for the response and good luck!

Sube might be correct for where he detects.

He is definitely not correct where I detect.

Handfuls of silver keep coming out of the ground for me using the Manticore and Deus 2. They make a great combo. Manticore especially with the M15 coil is simply deeper than Deus 2 with any coil here. Deus 2 will sometimes separate better. Both are finding mid depth and 8"+ depth targets that were totally missed by previous hunters including me using some excellent detectors like Etracs, CTX 3030s, V3is, Equinox models and the Legend. That doesn't mean those other detectors are necessarily inferior. Depends on soil conditions, settings, coil choices and overall depth.

So at least for me, Deus 2 with the 11" and 13X11" coils and Manticore with the M11 and M15 coils are clear winners as far as mid depth to deep silver/coin/jewelry detectors where I detect for overall effective depth with good target IDs, target separation and bad ground handling.

Photo is for last year (2024) using mostly the Manticore with M11 and M15 coils in public parks. These are parks that many local club members consider hunted out. If we have an impromptu hunt at some of these parks, many club members hunt for an hour and then go to a different park after not finding anything. I and a few others with Manticores continue to hunt them and get good results. The silver coins, rings and older coins/tokens keep being found. My gold totals have dropped off a bit so far this year compared to 2024 but that is probably not detector related.

As for the Ops question, some people buy the wrong detector for their skill level, get misled by whatever, don’t hunt enough, lose interest, or need the money. I am not hearing any bad reports from people I know and trust about either the Manticore or Deus 2 using up to v2.00 software for “normal” coin, jewelry, and relic hunting that regularly use them and know them well.
