My first BIG Silver of the year....finally!

W@W this was a long time coming! My post was going to be completely different than this one...until the last hole dug this morning, After 3 hours of swingin' the coil I had just 7 wheaties. Don't get me wrong I'm very happy with that because I hunt only areas that have been pounded for 30 plus years. I was going to post just that..my 7 wheaties and how I was happy to have popped them out of the pounded ground..and that how many times I'll come home after 3 to 4 hours with only a few wheaties and NO silver. Then it happened! I ran the coil over the last 3 feet of ground between the ground and where it changes to gravel. I got a nice high flutey hit and it read like silver. I didn't get overly excited because 3 or 4 of the wheaties had caused the crosshairs to peg like silver too. Anyway I dug down about 5" to 6" and popped out wheatie #8 and thought.."okay I will post these and explain how silver doesn't always pop out".
I gave the hole a quick double check with the probe as always...and BINGO...another coin in the hole! I got a solid pegged high hit that was definately silver about 2" deeper in the hole which was gravel at this depth. Now I got excited so I carefully dug down around the center of the hit as to not damage my silver dime that was sure to pop out. I pried at the last part of the circle of hardened soil/gravel mix and this big beauty plopped right up and out like a fish jumping out of water. My hands started shaking and I said "Holy Sh%*"..."that ain't no dime" (Before you ask.....the answer is yes... I was talking to myself!) I couldn't help it because this was honestly the last thing I expected to pop out. I was totally shocked as this site has been hit for 30 years and this is the first Walking Liberty Half that I have ever pulled out.I didn't even rub the dirt off yet because I wanted you all to see exactly how it came out of the nasty gravel soil. Man I LOVE this hobby!

My hands were definitely shaking and I felt like I should just stop detecting for the day right there since it just couldn't get any better than this

Glad to see you back at it.I ordered a 6" coil like yours and going to see if their is a difference in my 8".took the streetrod for a ride yesterday and had to be towed home small electric problem, got it going now. Its funny how big silver gets your heart beating fast.Congrats on your finds and good luck on your next hunt.

That is AWESOME!!! Just shows that every Inch of Ground is never covered, no matter how long a site has been pounded. You just make sure you get back there and detect along the rest of the Gravel Road or Roads at your hunting spot. That is one of the last spots most people will check due to Detectorist's thinking that the Coins will likely be only Newer Clad that is deeper due to the Roads getting Plowed in the winter or smoothed out when there is pot holes forming. Some Coins will get deeper this way but there is always them Deeper Older Coins waiting to be popped out from a patient hunter. Nice Looking Half Bryce and Congrats! Nice bunch of Wheat's also. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH.

nice find bryce, that little coil of yours is unbelievable.sure seems to pull them out of the ground.

Nice find! So the detector read the half and ignored the penny?

Thanks JW. No it picked up the penny and read it between clad dime and silver dime. Many times at this site the ground causes certain wheaties to crank the crosshairs upper right. Not completely on silver dime...but closer to silver than clad...just like it had done on 2 or 3 of the other wheaties I found. I also had problems pinpointing so I thought it might be a thin silver dime on edge because it pinpointed a little away from the original hit... It read the penny one way when I pinpointed...but from another direction it read higher like silver and 2" away from the penny hit...so it must have been picking up the half down another 2 or 3"....AND 2" to the left of the penny hit. The 6" coil actually did its best to separate those hits at less than 2" apart.
