My second gold ring with the CTX

Hunting season is now open in Central Illinois.....:biggrin: With the ground thawed and a day off work I thought I would try a new spot that had caught my eye. It turned out to be mostly fill dirt and rocks yielding mostly clad but a nice sounding 11-15 near a picnic table got me down on my knees and I was rewarded with a 2.4 g, 14K wedding band....:clapping: The bottom ring is a junker and I did get a 42 wheat too.

That there is a tough find! right by the picnic table in foil heaven? What made you key in on that signal? did it sound a bit different than typical foil, or did your years of experience help? A little of both?

Hi Mud, this place had very little foil and the picnic tables are pretty new but a lot of larger scrap metal in the 12-30 range really got on my nerves. This place used to be a railroad line turned into a city park. The 11-15 was just a clean signal in all directions. Maybe a little experience, luck and intuition combined, resulted in the ring find. :shrug: Sometimes you get a gut feeling on a signal that says "dig me", sometimes it pays off, sometimes it pays off big........:biggrin:

littlenugget, yes the CTX is a lot better around the iron than other detectors I have had. I and others have found good targets right next to, over and under iron.

littlenugget, I guess I forgot to answer your question about multiple targets on the screen, yes the CTX does show good targets and iron at the same time. I seem to remember an early post by Digger showing three or four targets on the screen at the same time but I can't find it....:shrug:

nice way to start off larry......nothin like a ring or 2 right off the bat... i made it out a week ago western ny.. when we had the warm up. really got me fired up only to go back down to gettin the icefishin stuff out again..... !!!!!!!!!!!! goodluck hh
 
Great job on the finds. So besides a clean sounding signal, stable ID numbers, what other type of behavior would you also look for as far as what the visual aspect on the screen when it comes to finding rings?. Does it look like a coin does, for example when you get a clean good hit on a coin. the screen shows a solid red color that fills in the cursor and doesn't splatter much if any. Would a ring show this as well? only reason why i am asking is because i tried hunting for rings last week for the first time ever,and i was digging 12-01 through 12-30 type signals. The screen was a solid hit and the numbers were stable as can be with very little splatter. I thought for sure i had a ring but it ended up being a very small shredded chunk of aluminum can about the size of a coin i would say. I don't have any real gold rings to test at home otherwise i would probably answer my own question by scanning the rings myself. Any info would be great. HH
 
Some gold rings, depending on orientation, sounds and looks just like a nickel (in this case). Finding gold is more of a crap shoot than anything and as some have said, trash to gold ratio can be as high as 1000 to 1 and I tend to agree, doing most of my hunting on land. I think your odds are a little better beach hunting. I usually don't post my trash but I carry a couple of 5 gallon buckets in the back of my truck for trash and I have to empty them a couple of times a year, so I do pay my dues for the goId. I have found gold from foil to the Indian cent range and sometimes you have a great tone and visual and sometimes you have a trashy signal. A broken ring will sound trashy as well as segmented gold, chains, bracelets, necklaces and rings vertical or on an angle.

You have to dig a lot of trash to get the gold. If there was an easier way, everybody would do it. :biggrin:

Thanks for taking time to answer my question. I know that i am going to dig alot of trash which is not a problem because like you said it could possibly be 1000 to 1 which i am willing to sacrifice by digging alot. I just wasnt sure if the rings gave out a certain "footprint" on the screen. I also understand that my chances increase by a great number if i were to hunt for gold on a beach. I also know to look for prime locations for example a sports field where activities have taken place, or picnic areas so i have a greater chance on finding jewelry there. i.e i wouldnt search high and low for a gold ring at an old farm site from the 1800s. Im going out right now.lol HH Larry and thanks again.
