What a strange hunt. Went to a park that everyone has pounded for years...and there just aren't many signals to dig anymore. It's a fun place...a big place...and a nice spot to just fall back on to swing the coil if I have no other place to go. i'm lucky if I can scare up a wheatie or 2 in 3 or 4 hours.
There is a very old section there about the size of a gym floor that I can never get any machine to settle down at. In the 80's it drove my white's nuts...in the 90's it drove my fisher nuts...now it drives my SE nuts. :thumbdown:There are power lines overhead...on ground transformers...underground power lines...you name it...if it can cause interference...it's there! I have NEVER been able to hunt it.:stars: Today for some reason...I got about 4 hours there and was at least able to detect...although there WAS interference. I knew there had to be some good stuff there because I have never known anyone who was able to detect there long.
. Someone had obviously gotten their machine to work well enough to get the mercs and wheaties in the 6" to 7" range from this spot...but the deep OLD goodies were still hidin' there.:super:
The detecting was very difficult...but at least it WAS finally possible. The SE was going crazy...but every now and then I could tell a good signal in between the interference gibberish. The first thing I dug was a 1905 Injun...and that would be the NEWEST coin I dug in the 4 hour hunt.:wiggle: I then popped out a Barber dime at about 8" down that hit just like a clad dime...but much deeper. 30 minutes later I got a signal that I honestly just took a chance on. It read like a nickel...but bounced straight left. I figured this was the first time in 25 years that i was able to hit this spot...so might as well DIG. Out popped the 1884 Injun from 8". Lately...I've dug some very old injuns...and NONE of them hit like a textbook injun should. The older ones have hit like a pulltab...but then jumped straight left.
Plugged along and dug another injun (1887) that hit weird like the last one...just a strange lower hit that puzzled me. :shrug:Had I not dug the 1862 fatty injun last week...I would probably not have dug the injuns today...cause they hit the same way...lower...then jumped to the left...so I took a chance and dug them.:yo:
About an hour later I got a bouncer hit that danced accross the top of the screen...but it sounded very sweet. Out popped the 1893s Barber dime which is a $25 coin in vg condition.
The good signals were very few and far between...but they were ALL OLDIES.
The first 2 hours I used my 10 x 14 Excelerator coil...but as slow as I swing...my shoulder needed a break...so it was time to use the 1050 coil for the next 2 hours. It wasn't so much the weight of the coil as much as it is my bad shoulder from getting cracked on my Harley a few years ago! Nonetheless...anyone who has ever hunted with me will tell you....I don't even really swing the coil....I go super slow motion and just "scan" the ground...and it takes it's toll on me after a couple of hours.
I had 2 hours left...so off I went...right back through the same section I just hit...but at a different angle this time. It was really hard to hear the signals through the gibberish...which had gotten worse now towards the evening for some reason?? I got an iffy silver hit...but it was very deep and really stuck out through all the interference sounds coming from the SE. I dug down about 8" and out popped a coin I have NEVER seen before. I got all excited because it looked like a half dime...but smaller....VERY tiny....and VERY thin. I had no clue what it was because I didn't recognize the head on the front. What a let down when we realized it was a Canadian silver 5 cent piece...and not a half dime....or half reale.:lmfao: Oh well...still silver...still a neat find...and it was an 1897. :rolleyes:How tiny is it?...well the barber dimes I found weigh 2.5 grams each and you know how thin they are. The canadian 5 cent silver piece weighs ONLY 1.2 grams...LESS than half of what the barbers do..and is paper thin.:minelab:
A long time went by and I was getting very frustrated...as by now...the interference was just unbarable. I hadn't even been able to distinguish a good signal from gibberish in over an hour. Finally I heard that sweet sound mixed in ..but no way I could even attempt to pinpoint from all the noise...so I guessed at the location...cut a monster plug...then ran the probe in the hole. BINGO...about 3" deeper...out popped the third Barber dime. I was really hoping for a seated...as I haven't found one in a while. :confused:Oh well. You know you've had a great hunt when you are a little let down to see a third Barber dime come out of the ground.:detecting: :crylol: It was a 1901 and very nice...full Liberty clearly visible along the head:thumbup:
Thanks for reading...and good luck on your next hunt.

Great Job, now only if I can get the job done.

Thats awesome ,That is more Barbers then I found in a couple of years in one hunt.Glad to see you out and hope things are going good for you and family.Have a good one and good luck on your next hunt.:clapping:

drives my Explorers crazy with electrical interferance. I have noticed though that if I detect there early in the morning (6:00am) the interferance is a lot less than evening. Early Sunday morning the best time to go so I think it might have something to do with electric demand of the surrounding area. Kinda like the internet, especially dialup, it's slower in the evening than the morning because more user are on line in the pm hours. Just a thought, have you ever detected there early in the morning?

Try turning off fast and deep, turn gain down to 6, but keep your sens. up to what you can....20-26.....and go back and try it in an off peak time for electrical usage if possible.....you will still get interference but it will be more noticable when a coin is under coil...and cursor and digital #'s will be more stable....let me know if it works for you.....AWSOME COINS BRYCE!!!.....an S and an O....Super! :super:

WOW BRYCE---What a hunt site and what a hunt, congrats. I've been following your posts since about May of 2007 and they have been SO interesting. I hope I can get half as good as you on that Explorer before The Lord calls me home. Thanks for sharing, Del

doesn't care what settings you use....nothing settles it or the SE down. Over the last 30 years... I hit this place numerous times each and every year and it's always been the same...yet for some reason it gave me a few hours of huntin' this time. I've hit it at 6 A.M......noon.....midnight....you name it...I've been there:crylol:
As for fast and deep....I've been hunting with those both off for close to a year now. I hunt with high gain anyway...so there was really no need for deep on to begin with. When I use the 6" excelerator coil though in a smaller and trashy area...fast is on for me. I don't like it on at any other time because it chops the signal too much. On my sensitivity...I always run semi auto. If I am at a crazy site like this one; I always experiment with lower gain in which case I will then try manual sensitivity....but 99% of the time I run high gain and semi auto sensitivity.
This place has been called many nicknames over the years....."Forbidden Zone"...."Twighlight Zone"...."Bermuda Triangle"...and many more:rofl:
It's also been called a few more choice names by myself on days when it absolutely refuses to let me swing the coil:smoke:
I may take my cz70pro there and try it in salt mode which is one thing I've not tried yet.You never know until you try.
Good luck on your next hunt.

hitting it at every hour known to man:bouncy: Nothing seems to make a difference....setting changes....time frame....weather. I don't know what the deal is but for some reason I was able to get a few hours in this time:detecting: Funny thing is that it was the busiest peak time of the day??
Good luck on your next hunt.

I found four silver and NO wheaties. I don't think that's ever happened to me before. Take care buddy. Gotta' head to work now.I guess I'll have to respond to the others in the morning.

putting tin foil over your coil and wrapping it up tight? Tin foil is great at stopping electrical interference, we do it at work all the time on our engineering test benches. Anyway I was just wondering if you have ever tried that method. LMAO

Tuff going in that zone Bryce !!!

Nice result...

I found a park that sounds just like your place....Charles(UpstateNY) and I hit and bam...we were digging old coins, it was tough but hey when there was a coin, you knew the diff.from noise.....the place has been hit hard up till the underground lines got put it and now nobody can hunt it...except the Explorers....what a life ...now if we can just sneek past the Ranger, Yogie!

The first thing I always do at a site like that is drop the gain like you suggested. If it doesn't help...then I put it back where I like it. As for fast and deep....I already had fast and deep off as I do most of the time. I even switched to ferrous/AM to no avail. You suggested that I drop the gain and turn off fast and deep. I had already tried both of those things to no avail...so how does that make me set in my ways:crazy:
Sounds like my experience was much the same as yours and Charles'...the hunting was very difficult...but when I hit a coin I at least knew it enough to take a chance and dig. Hey brother...it's all good...and I truly appreciate you trying to help me out:thumbup: I was just trying to convey that that I had already tried the settings you suggested...but nothing seemed to help. Trust me...I'll keep experimenting and tryiing different stuff until I find some combination that will hopefully let me pull some more goodies out. Thanks Mattockman and good luck on your next hunt.

You always have a great story to go along with your finds Bryce. Thanks for the educational and informative posts that you contribute. :please:
