ok i thought that to use fast on was better in loose soil?fast off in hard compact soil?hey ANDY where do you run the gain? thanks
 
It feels like winter is just about over here in Boise, by the way my dog is shedding I think we are in for an early spring. The nights still get down in the low 30
 
I have noticed that using manual sens.that I get a little deeper on some finds,you have to put up with a little bit of more noise in man.higher sens. but i have found deeper hits this way.I get alot of mixed input on where to set the gain.I need some input from you ANDY on the gain settings and its affects out in the real world.what do you think?

I'm a SE user who's interested in going to an ET. I just bought Andy's book off of eBay. Andy, is there a chance you can post a screen print of what your discrimination pattern looks like (reference from your post that started this thread)? I'm asking because just like I did before I bought my SE I collected as much info as I could from various posts, printed it all, placed it into a file so I could reference it. Doing this really cut down the transition from DFX to SE, and I think doing it again will make getting used to my future ET a breeze.

I am thinking Andy is out hunting! :surrender: So, here is my version of his coin hunting pattern. It's the same except I opened it up a bit. I like to use the least amount of discrimination as possible so I like his pattern and use it quite a bit, just mod'd it a little to accept more gold / platinum (and Foil of course! :rage: ) and lower FE numbers for deeper silver. I uploaded it if you want to try it but if you have Andy's already you can just "cut" out the parts! :) It looks like this.

Sorry about being absent from the forums for a while but other commitments and issues have had me occupied.

The question about RECOVERY FAST affecting performance in hard vs loose soil is not correct. The FAST setting determines how the detector processes signals in close proximity to one another and is the preferred setting in high trash, especially iron trash. It does affect the target ID accuracy but it will allow you to pick out signals that might otherwise have not been picked up as the coil left the trash and passed over the good signal before it was ready to detect the next target. The E-Trac does a better than average job in picking good targets from amongst trash even in the FAST OFF setting so use what works best and determine how much impact it has on the target ID accuracy.

The setting you want to use for loose soil such as plowed fields is the GROUND setting and NEUTRAL is teh option that will produce better performance in loose soil conditions.

As far as GAIN goes, I tend to run between 26 - 28 depending on the age of the site.

I developed the initial pattern after using the various prototype versions of the E-Trac for several months during development and then for a few after it was officially released. Slight changes to the lower FE rejection level is usually warranted when there are larger relics you want to find and reducing the CO rejection on the left when you might be passing over small gold jewelry on the beach. Other than that, I tend to use this pattern probably 90% of the time. As a matter of fact I used it at the G N R S hunt recently and found several cannon ball fragments and balls while not digging a myriad of nails that some did.

100 other commitments and demands on my time have impacted my hunting but I have been out enough to come up with some decent finds so far this year . . . . . the 15F weather here in the South is also not conducive to a full day in the field :surrender:

The tweaks you made to the pattern look good . . . . . opening up the left side is something I only do on beaches as the foil and ground noise gets too overwhelming in most areas.

thanks I read the book over and over,it gets more simplified by the 3rd time,anyhow have you thought about making some dvd's? that would be nice on the cold winter days we cant get out?hey thanks for the advice read the fast off think in a british detector magazine the author wrote?so much for his theories. thanks again.DVD'S
 
Thought I'd bump this up and see what else we can add to it. This will give a lot of information to some of the newer E-Tracers here. Especially if you've read Andy's book!

I started using Andy's coin pattern from day one. A little over a year ago I was sitting at home - much like now, with no ground that wasn't froze. Reading Andy's book. Reading this forum - even the old posts. Watching Youtube - videos like mad, and reading anything on other forums that had to do with the E-Trac.

I felt I'd cut my learning curve way down. Here is a least one tip to someone with very little experience detecting or with the DD coil, that I found out the hard way.

Often it is the "shallower" targets that are the hardest to listen to and sometimes pinpoint accurately. At least for me it was. The 4 inches and greater targets seemed easier because it was just ONE BEEP per swing. All of a sudden you get the 3 and 4 beeps per "width" of the coil and it CROWDS the sound.

I wasn't really prepared for this and no I didn't have a test garden with a shallow coin for that scenerio. I mean - a newbie isn't concerned with a "shallow" coin.

It's not whether to DIG or NOT DIG, it just trying to be forwarned of that situation coming up so you are not surprised by it....and yes I've found many very good targets that were within the top 2 inches of the surface.

Yes, I agree - pinpointing very shallow targets is usually tougher than the deeper ones.
 
ET Ohio,

I've found the same for shallow targets... try raising the coil still in detect mode, otherwise the edges of the coil will "hit" on the target causing double or triple beeps. Helps narrow it down anyway :)
