Smallest U.S. coin

congrats Gatekeeper. It is a beautiful coin. One that some may have passed up, thinking it was just another nickel. Glad to see you did the research, made the find, and shared your post. HH Randy

I was running Ferrous Coin when I found it. My hunting buddy and I are constantly doing research to locate such area's. We even walked the property and found the trail. The trail has ruts from the wagons that are in some area's over a foot deep. We knew we had found the trail because there are big oak tree's in the middle of the trail meandering through the woods indicating the trail was there for a very long time. Some of the items found so far have been a Capped Bust quarter, Large Cents, Silver 3 cents, and a silver hub cap from a wagon that had U.S. Mail stamped in it.

Constant research has been the key to our success. Finding old maps, talking to older people, walking properties, and overlaying on Google Earth are the reasons why we find the older coins and relics. What was so cool about finding the trail was that I enabled the GPS on the CTX, recorded way points, and then uploaded to my PC. Parts of the trail were visible from Google Earth. From there we could see where the trail was going for several miles, going from town to town.

Seated Half Dime is 15.5mm this dollar coin is 13mm so it is smaller than a Half Dime

what mode were you detecting in? because that can change the TID's... I wonder if the size matters?(keep it clean :) would a 2 1/2 dollar gold coin come in at the same TID or would it be different? or a 5 dollar gold coin? has anyone found any other gold coins to compare TID's.
Thanks

martygene, for the most part, the difference in Modes only significantly affects the TID of both large clad and silver dollars and half dollars. The TID chart in the CTX Resources can answer some of your TID questions on some different gold coins. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?87,173133 Forum

What a coincidence. I was reading some old Western and Eastern Treasures Magazines last night and in the February 1995 issue is a story of someone (Craig Jones) finding that exact coin and date along the Old Wire Road in Southwest Missouri. There is a long article about his find. Though you would find that somewhat interesting... nes

Great Find,Back in the mid-70's I would mow a very large lawn for an elderly lady. She would pay me only 25 cents to 1 dollar. We are talking 4 hours hard work.I might have neglected to tell you that was in gold.Mostly California 25 cent pieces they are really small if I worked all day I would get 1 dollar gold coin. She never seem to run out of this small gold.I mowed her lawn almost 15 years she pass away I told her daughter about how I was getting paid. Her daughter went back into her moms house and came out with a mason jar 1/2 full of the small gold coins almost all were tiny California gold coins. Her grandson still has them.Great Find and thanks for sharing.I am surprised at how many people have gold coins in my area that were handed down.

Jim,
That is really awesome. Can you post another picture next to a dime so we have a reference? I've never personally seen one of those.
