The E-Trac Is An Amazing Machine !

E-Trac-Ohio

Well-known member
Yesterday, I posted photo's of the finds from my last few hunts in this forum.
Got lucky - had a great week - found some nice old coins - including a 1946 Walking Liberty Half Dollar - the second one I've found this year - they sure are great looking coins !

But the coin I keep thinking about the most is the 1906 Liberty V Nickel that I found at the church that was built in 1864. As mentioned in my other post ... this Nickel was down a solid 6" - in a very hard packed gravel / dirt parking area. The ground is so hard in this parking area - that it took me more than 5 minutes to dig down to the coin - digging in layers - pulling one stone at a time out of the hole with my finger tips. Even though the E-Trac had to see through almost solid rock - I still got a very clear - FE (7 to12) - CO (11 to 13) target ID.
This totally amazes me !

Just a hint for digging in gravel........ I use various diameter and length screwdrivers for this, the shaft and blades are able to get between most stones, for rocks you may need a small crowbar. Sometimes you may need a small hammer to help persuade your tool into the crud. Good Luck..............NGE

Great idea - I could see where using a screwdriver would be a big help - thanks for the tip !

You're very welcome. I have learned many things in my 51 years of detecting.........NGE

i know that feeling.....man. i have to wonder, what compelled you to go through all that effort.... how did you get the feeling that it was a good target...i probably would have thought it likely to be junk...or maybe not worth all that effort just in case. were you sure it was a nickel?

Moonshine - I've found approx. 20 to 30 old coins in this church parking area over the last year or so - Barber's - SLQ's - V and Buffalo Nickels, Indians, Wheats, etc.
Because of the depth of the target and very solid target ID numbers I got - I was 99% sure that this 1906 V Nickel - was a very old Nickel - before I dug it.

It's not that bad - you just take your time and work the stones loose with your digger - (but I will be bringing a few screwdrivers next time).
I'd be willing to work a lot harder than this - for old coins like these - any day !

ahh i see, thanks. i understand and i agree with you.
