Tiny 1797 silver coin

I found a very small coin today that looks like this picture. It is about have the size of a regular dime but a little thicker. It has 16 stars, says LIBERTY on one side and United States Of America on the other side.

I will try to post a real picture after dinner. My camera battery is charging.

If you have any idea what coin has this face, is made of silver, and dated 1797 I would appreciate it. I have not found an exact match on the Internet yet.

I'll check back later.)

It appears that you have a Bust Dime... rare and valuable coin...http://www.bestcoin.com/early-dimes-1796-1837.htm

Called a draped bust dime. The experts estimate that the survival of that coin is 200, well 201 now. Even in the worst condition it is worth $1500. Even for coming out of the ground if it is great shape could be worth over $20,000. Awsome find congratulations!!!:hot::yo::cheers:

Its a bust dime. Threre are 3 1797's one with 13 stars one with 15 stars and one like yours with 16 stars. worth a lot of money! yours mint condition is worth about $7,000 and in bad condition still worth around $650.00.

congrats on the awesome find. Did you find it in a park, field, someones yard?

hopefully treasure sstate is right! you are one lucky guy!

Relooking at joedirt's post it says "have the size" maybe joe meant "half the size" which would make it a half dime and still worth a good bit of money!!

I don't know. It's just so small. I said half the size of a regular dime earlier but it may be more like a third or fourth the size. Here are the best pictures I could muster so far with the equipment at hand.

Wow. That is a stunning find. Congratulations. If you can get a better pic I would recommend you put that up, even if it takes a while.

The only small silver coins made for the date were the half dime and dime. A half dime had a diameter of 16.5 mm. and the dime was 19.8 mm. Modern dimes are 17.9 mm. That coin is too small to be even a half dime so I have not a clue.

I put a magnifying glass over my blackberry camera lens to produce a picture of the front and back. It gives a little more detail.

As near as I can judge by your pictures that coin is only 6 mm across which makes it 10.5 mm to small to be a real coin. I have no idea, may be from a charm bracelet. It is interesting to say the least.

Yeah, I pulled out my ammo caliber. It is .045" thick and .335" wide. Not sure what it is or where it came from.

Small enough to be California gold or Small gold piece sure it is silver? I have Califorina gold pieces that small only one problem Etrac or Safari will not pick them up.

I do not believe California minted any gold coins then gold wasn't dicovered until 1848.

nice find! Doesn't look gold. Very interesting. Keep us informed, please
