Tiny 1797 silver coin

It also looks to be a mis-strike...slightly off center. I would think that would make it a little rarer. neat coin!

Yeah, I pulled out my ammo caliber. It is .045" thick and .335" wide. Not sure what it is or where it came from.
How much does it weigh?-----The pictures you showed--it looks like a Capped Bust Heraldic $5 half eagle (gold).----But your measurements doesn't "mesh".----Authentic coin measurements & weight should be as follows---Diameter: 25.00mm/0.99 inch-----Weight: 8.75 grams/0.28 ounce------Metallic Content: 91.67% gold, 8.33% copper and silver-----Weight of pure gold: 8.02 grams/0.26 ounce.-------Your coin could well be a counterfeit or a "fake" coin-----BUT---if it is this (authentic) coin I just described---you can (almost) retire off of it!-----My advice would be---have an expert, HONEST coin dealer look at it----and don't let the coin out of your sight while he/she is doing it!------------Del

I'm not 100% sure it is silver either. It looks more silverish than gold, but does have a slight yellow hue. It is non metallic and less than 1 gram on my kitchen scale. A wheat penny weighed 3 grams, this coin never came off zero. I need smaller scale for an exact weight.

I did some searches last night and found several mini coin sets made with modern coins, penny, dime, nickel, quarter, half and even some older miniatures of the Morgan and gold eagle, but could not find any matches yet for the origin of this particular mini.

I call it a mini because that's the closet thing I can relate it to. It has a reeded edge and I looked at it all the way around and see no connection point if it were a charm.

I think it is some kind of replica mini coin. Still don't know who made it, where or why yet.

I believe that you may be right on a reproduction the obverse is right but the reverse has the same eagle as the 1800 half dime.. but it is wrong for the 1797 coin... http://www.us-coin-values-advisor.com/Early-Half-Dimes-key-dates.html

We haven't been this stirred up in a while! What a cool little find. Keep us posted as to what exactly you find out on this unique piece! Thanks for the pictures.

Amazing and Exciting

What program did you use when you found this coin?
A previous question asked where you found it as in a park, etc and I too am curious.

Don't be afraid of success, this may be the "BIG ONE".

Major congrats again and no need to wish you luck, your a mighty lucky guy!

I'm going to take it to a coin dealer today to see if they can identify it. I suspect it is some sort of modern replica. I've seen other replicas of modern coins on the Internet and if they are not made of precious metal they only sell for a few dollars. Maybe I'll get lucky and it turns out to be a replica from the period.

I said earlier that it was non metallic. I meant to say non magnetic. It is definitely made of metal, I just don't know exactly which. It tests 12/35 in the air.

I found it in a school yard in the old "Historic" area of town. Because the area and ground it was found on dates back to the 1660's I'm thinking maybe it is a period piece, but since it was in a school yard built less than 100 years ago I'm thinking maybe it is some kind or doll house coin or other modern toy.

I was using a modified coin discrimination pattern in 4 tone ferrous mode. I can't say for sure about the tone mode at the time as I switched from 2 tone to 4 tone ferrous and conductive in various combinations that day. I did not use multi-tone at all, I do remember that. Regardless my other settings never changed - Trash high, ground difficult, recovery fast, deep off, sensitivity Auto mode only - sometimes as high as + 3 and sometimes -3 if trying to get more clarity on an already detected signal.

I didn't even give the coin much thought in the field. I thought it was the wheel off a big lighter, or a round nut, or some other trash like that. I didn't even rinse the muck off of it until I got home. I just took a brief glace at it and put it in my pouch and moved on. It wasn't until I got home and rinsed it off that I realized it was some sort of coin. It wasn't until I got out the magnifying glass to look at it closer and saw the date 1797. My heart skipped a beat I think.

I hope the coin dealer can give me more information because I still have not found an exact match on the Internet. It looks like the $5 gold piece, but it is miniature. You would think that if this were common you would see another one on E-Bay or something. So far, nothing.

Well Joe, WHATEVER it is, you have really got all our interests up!! :)-----Do let us know just as soon as you find out something about it (get it identified).--------Del

A truely excellent find. Congrats and hope you find more.

Mystery solved.

The coin expert said that it was a previously gold plated replica of a 1797 $5 gold capped bust in miniature. He said it might have come from the Franklin mint or some other such place that made miniature replicas. He said that it was not a piece from the period because making miniature replicas of old coins is a modern endeavor.

It weighs .5 grams and is made of sterling silver.

I guess the good news is that the E-Trac once again proves that it can sniff out silver coins. Even when they are tiny and / or fake. :heh:

glad that you found out what it was... a cool find nonetheless

Agreed....still a pretty cool find!! :cheers:Heres to you finding the real deal now!!
