Tried 50 tone FC today!

I'm still playing with programs and learning the machine as I go. I figured I'd add a few new programs on my CTX and try them. To say the least, this machine is awesome, and I found a rather rare coin this morning too! I couldn't believe it, when I saw it. And it is in incredible condition also. The pics really doesn't do it justice.

That IS in really nice condition, congratulations. I found one yesterday, 1868 but the fertilizer in our farm fields really does a number on them.

wow that's awesome. can you explain in detail how you set up the program. im guessing all done with xchange. went right from a etrac to the 3030 but not to impressed so far. digging a huge amount of rusty nails all sizes

You may not be impressed yet, but you will be. Give it some time.

Dannyj74,

Give it a little more time. I traded the etrac in on a CTX also. When I started all I did was use the stock programs and simply assigned tones that I liked. I didn't make any other changes until I got used to the 'feel', of the machine. The similarities to the Etrac made for a fairly easy transition.
I'm still learning with every trip out. As I get better I experiment by making minor program changes and learn how the changes affect performance before making additional changes.
Take your time and it will come. You'll get the hang of it. I still am digging my share of iron but I am learning how to interpret 'target trace' which really helps. Over time I have gotten better at interpreting the sounds of those pesky bits of iron. Still dig 'em, but a lot less than a couple months ago.

sweet thanks for the boost. i was really not liking the outcome. ill take your advise and i will also play with the sounds
thanks again

Pay close attention to where it pinpoints and if the signal disappears after turning 90 degrees on the target Danny then more than likely its iron. believe me if i saved all of my "doubts" i would probably have about a 5 gallon bucket full of rusty nails to prove it.GL

I hunted a couple of parks yesterday that I had only hunted in combined with the CTX - and switched to my 50 tones conductive mode with Andy's old coin pattern (I think of it as my E-Trac mode). I had a blast - forgot how much fun it was listening to all the nuanced sounds. Best of all, I found some nice oldies that I had missed!

I'm really liking the 50 Tone...I stopped for a short hunt after work for about an hour and picked up a rosie and some clad.

I can't understand that 50 tone. I hunt it in combined. I have a friend out west that loves it, so I'm going to have to learn it. I still dig a pile of old square nails, but you would be shocked how often a one way signal is actually a silver on edge. Masked by the iron in the hole. I take it for granted that I'm digging two pounds of iron in the nail yard. I'm also taking home some beauty old silvers. Maybe 50 will help a little. Thanks for the tip

"Maybe 50 will help a little."

Not sure how changing a Tone Profile will help? Changing the Tone Profiles has nothing to do with what the CTX detects or if it alerts.

It only changes how that alert sounds. A one-way will still be that. IMO once you have an alert tone (no matter what profile has been chosen) looking at the target trace info on screen will "help" more than anything.

I seem to dig a lot of old nails in the 12-41 to 12-43 range though

Is that with or without any indication of iron on the bottom of the target trace screen? Sometimes I am so eager to dig that I find myself not carefully evaluating what the machine is trying to indicate.

I dug a nail yesterday in a hole where I thought I had a good signal. As I filled the hole in I found wondering how I had been fooled by a nail; I encountered the dime that had given me the signal.

If I would have looked at the screen more carefully I would have seen the iron (nail) target also. Then expecting the nail I wouldn't have given up on the other good target so easily.

I run "high trash" with my 50 tone mode and I can usually tell the iron apart from the good stuff (just like on my E-Trac) by watching the displayed ferrous number. If it's consistently high with a high audible tone then it's probably an iron false (there are other variables as well, such as how clean the signal remains when hitting it from different angles, etc). I will then use the "last" function to jump to my ferrous-coin combined mode with a wide open screen to check the signal and investigate it further. I used to do this with the E-Trac on iffy signals by checking the signal in TTF mode.

That's probably a big art of it Park...I came from an AT Pro and I forget to watch the screen more often now with the ctx.. and listen to tones..by habit..

doc,

You say "If it's consistently high with a high audible tone then it's probably an iron false"

How high do you consider high?

This evening I tried the 50 with HT and an open screen except for the bottom. It was a very interesting experience. I went back and forth from it to the GH open Combined on six dug targets, 1-qtr, 2-dimes and 3 older pennys. It did really sing with that combination.

I will experiment some more. I moved up from a 705 where I used the 28 tones so it wasn't that strange. I had got lulled into the Combined by all the hype without really trying the 50; glad I finally took the time.
