Hi all - I am a safari user and like it. But I coin hunt in very trashy areas, and think it might be worth upgrading to the etrac. Big enough difference between the 2 machines to justify shelling out the cash? ***Also I see the price everywhere is pretty much 1498. Will any of these dealers negotiate on a new machine? Thanks

Upgrading from Safari to etrac - do it?

HI JD,
I'll give a shot at this Q.
I don't think the dealers can go below that base level, but some will offer more freebees and givieits with your purchase check around.
To get mine I had to sell some stuff, save some, and believe I would be able to use it enough to justify the cost. I am able to convince my other half that it is cheaper for me to buy and use a rechargeable detector than all the other hobbies that can cost much more to keep doing... just look at the cost of equipment for any of your other favorites and add it up. The big difference for me is that I don't have to make a reservation, buy a ticket, get it serviced, licenced, loaded, tagged, gassed, etc etc...I can go at a moments notice, when and where I want. She knows I will use mine and have lots and lots of fun with it. I also let her wear whatever jewelry she likes that I find and make it a point to tell her how much money I find.
I personally cant think of many hobbies that pay you back as well in not only money but also in the way you begin to appreciate and learn about the history you find with it and where to find it.
The Safari is a good machine...If you want an E trac it will be a good machine too...just make sure you will use it as much as you pay for it.

Thanks Utah - I am addicted. I got it bad. So I may as well get the best drug. that would be the e-trac from what i have seen in countless hours of research. That's what I thought about price. It is what is. Hopefully I can get 700 or for the safari since i just paid 1000 a few months ago. That'll pay for half of it. So many settings to play with on the e-trac. I think it will help me pick more goodies out of the trash once i spend the 100 or so hours getting good with it.

I had a Safari last year and asked the very same question! Everybody said ''go for it''! That is what I will say to you as well.The Safari is an outstanding machine but It the ultra trashy colonial sites that I like to hunt,The E-Trac blows it's doors off! I will not settle for second best! My Safari would stick on a null where the E-Trac,with it's much faster reset speed,tends not to stick on ferrous objects.The transition from the Safari was easy as well.If you want the best,then shell out the cash and just do it! You will not be disappointed!
Actually dealers can sell for whatever they want,they can't tell them to sell them for a certain price.
But most dealers stick to the norm on prices,depending on if they are running a full time business,
or as a side hobby.

The bottom line - The Safari is a great machine - but the E-Trac is the best machine.
I had my Safari for one month - I always had the question in the back of my mind - Am I missing any good finds by not have the "best machine" ?
Lost $300.00 when I sold the Safari - bought a used E-Trac with less than ten hours on it for $1100.00 - so it worked out ok in the end.

Yes,my good friend Mark-E-TRAC-OHIO,was in the same boat and we talked about the 2 machines in considerable length.We talked about the pros and cons as well.IN the end I think we can both say that we are happy with our switch and he and I have made many more incredible finds with our E-Tracs than with the Safari.
Thanks for the great replies. That settles it. I am taking the day off and getting the etrac today. If I knew I was going to like detecting so much I would have got it in the first place. I like many of you need to have the best or it bothers me. Conductor7e said it so well. I think he and I were in the exact same boat. I hunt old yards in Massachusetts mostly. Very trashy. Just like he said - I seem to get stuck in null forever because there are so many different items in a tiny area that the machine is trying to figure out even with a slow sweep speed. These people used their yards as dumps before the garbage man. Not bashing the Safari, just think the etrac will handle my type of coin hunts better, and i will enjoy it so much more knowing I have the best. The etrac is the way to go. I have researched this to the fullest. I knew it all along. Just needed nudge from the people that use them. Thank you all! I will try not to bother you all with too many questions about it once I am up and running. Already ordered Andy's etrac book. Let me know if any of you know the best way to sell a slightly used safari.

This forum is a great place to sell your machine - no selling fee's - and be sure not to sell it for to low of a price - used Safari's are very in high demand !!!

Yes,very good choice! I'm only up the road from you in southwestern New Hampshire and these early New England colonial sites are pretty much the same....HORRIBLE!!!!! If you do not have the right machine for this type of hunting,you can just forget having any success.You will be chasing square nail bits all day thinking they are deep half dimes or something.LOL The E-Trac is the best machine that I have ever used to poke through the ferrous trash that dominates the early home sites.Best of luck and please feel free to keep us posted!

Ha - - i was just whining on the safari forum the other day that I was digging square nails all day and didn't know what was i doing wrong. guess it's better than digging empty holes. at least i am pinpointing and locating the target although it is not the target i hoped for.
