V4

I hope they add ferrous and conductivity screen option like E-Trac does, the spectra graph should be eliminated it is not helpful at all

April 1st........... :heh:

HUH? V4!?! Really? This isn't April Fools Early...?

It sounds like an April fools to me Des. With Carl and other engineers having left, I don't know what will happen at White's.

April 15 you should be able to send the v3i's in for upgrade to the v4. Included in the software upgrade may be two added frequencies, the ability to hunt in one or any combination including just two frequencies, and a pi mode.

The spectragraph not helpful?

Can you elaborate, Dan93. I am curious why you think that way.

Must admit i cannot see this machine happening at the moment, when you loose 2 ultra key folks in a detecting company you will then start back pedalling, although electronic engineers are common place but folks that specialise in the detecting electronic field are few and far between especially when you have a string of winners attached to your name.I am pretty certain these guys can demand a fair amount of salary and to a certain extent only one or two of the top detecting companies can afford them and FT are the lucky one to have been able to offer them this type of package.

I have had and still use my DFX for nearly 10 years but i never upgrade to the V3 range and the reason was it was just far to difficult to tame,so although i think Whites are my favourite brand i just hope they can still provide a top flight model like the V3 but slight less complicated to use.

This is of course just my opinion.

For me just seems like random bar graphs what will happen with 5 freq it will be too much visually. I prefer the Etrac plot type screen

Someone mentioned Pi mode how would this work with old V3s electronics

Thanks Dan. I understand now.

The V3i spectragraph is probably the best visual representation of a target signal available today because the V3i allows you to adjust the spread of numbers that generate a bar. The default is 7 vdi number per bar. If you adjust that number down to 1 or 2 VDI numbers per bar you can see the ramp up, peak and ramp down of the target response. You can see this on three frequencies, or you can setup to just see the primary frequency response. There is a lot more information contained in the signagraph than there is in the Minelab 2 axis plot. A properly configured signagraph can show the ramp up, peak and ramp down of a target response. You can tell if the object is round and laying flat or tilted on edge and in which direction it is tilted. It's not like this out of the box, the user has to configure it. This, combined with the secondary options, like the sizing graph or polar plot far outshines the inductive/conductive plots.

Regards combining PI and VLF, this only requires additional computing power. The real question is why do it at all.

A discriminating PI could only give course discrimination because the only way it can discriminate is by sampling at various pulse delays, which is not capable of the same fine discriminating range obtainable by phase shift response. But in high mineral, or conductive ground, just being able to tell ferrous/nonferrous responses would be a benefit.

What ever happens, I doubt it will be dumbed down as the V3X is already available for those that need it a little simpler.

FT is First Texas which is the parent company of Fisher. First Texas also owns Teknetics and Bounty Hunter metal detectors.

So the V4 is just a software upgrade?

Personally, I'd love to see them come out with an updated XL Pro - Tone ID, modern analog meter, selectable manual/auto ground balance, selectable 4-filter/3-filter, and tweak the circuit to squeeze out the best possible performance from the 6000-type design.

It is a rumor...an unfounded rumor. Heard it from a birdie at Whites that the V4 does not exist...I wish it did tho!

Ya I too wonder if White's will be coming out with anything new. I wish they would just take the whole "M" series MX5,M6 and MXT All Pro) and give them honest to goodness updates. Call them the M5, M7 and M9.

I find it strange that the lower end Coinmaster GT that has a MSRP of $399.95 has a Backlight and Trac lock feature ( to lock the GB) Now we jump to the MX5 ( MSRP $599.95)which is feature rich but does not give you the ability to lock the GB , a Trac lock feature, a feature that is found on their cheaper machine. This is the only reason that stopped me from getting one. I hunt iron infested sites and the GB will get outta sorts in those kinda sites due to all the iron trash and the auto tracking trying to deal with it. That is the reason to have a lock trac function.

Then we have the M6 (MSRP $699.95) which lacks a threshold and also has no back light ( although I think they intended for this machine to be more of a silent search machine, hence the lack of a threshold adjustment)
But does have the abilty to lock the GB and then the MXT All Pro at MSRP $899.95 I will say that the jump from the MXT 300 to the MXT Pro did add some nice features such as the 3 buttons on the TID display for Tones. Ground Grab and Backlight, while getting rid of the Notch feature.

So maybe give a new MX5 the ability to lock the GB.

Update the M6 to have a backlight, a tones button and ground grab, basically giving it the same TID display as the current MXT All Pro. And eliminate having to push the PP button in the forward position. Maybe add in a threshold adjustment too.

The MXT All Pro is maybe get rid of the Icons and actually put more useful information on the display such as ground phase, which you can get but you have to switch to Prospecting Mode to see it. Maybe also give it an "Iron Audio feature and a means to control iron audio volume and perhaps a manual GB along with the auto trac feature.

Don't take me wrong I really like Whites and the machines that they produce.( See my signature) I have found lots of nice old coins and tokens with the M6 and MXT Pro.......but sometimes the way things are done are a bit confusing......its kinda like Ford saying we will put cruise control on our Ford Escorts but we will not put that feature on our Lincoln Town Cars.

Seems lately they have kinda stumbled around a bit. The MX5 did come out but lacked a key feature, then they took the MXT Pro...slapped a little "ALL" sticker on the side of the box, gave it a different coil....not really the kinda updates I was looking for. I think as far as performance, the M series is there..........I just wish we had more feature options to really get the most out of each machine. For example, the new Macro Racer that is about ready to pop onto the scene. I had a chance to use the one Monte got to test and evaluate. Not only is it a great performer, but it is also loaded with a bunch of useful features. It has a back light, ground phase, auto GB and manual GB ,ability to lock the GB,a threshold just to name a few ie: in order to get all the features that this machine offers i would just about have to buy three different Whites machines to get them all.

And I see Whites just recently lost a couple key people, don't know if that will have an effect on the company or not.
Also please don't take this as a "gripe" from me, they have great machines. But instead of something new, take the great machines they already have and just make them a little greater by adding features, or features that are lacking and should be there ( M6 with a backlight for example ) :)

As far as the V series machines, never really did get into those....so I'll leave that to the folks that use them to add their own "wish list" so to speak.

I agree with Gregg. White's has a GREAT platform with the MXT. They nailed it with the MXT's basic design and performance. Don't mess with success, just improve upon it. SO instead of trying to come out with some bells-whistles Minelab killer, White's ought to stick with what they do best:: making great performing detectors. The MXT interface could just use a little freshening after 13 years, and I agree with Gregg. Put an XLT.DFX style screen on the MXT with backlight and spectragraph and ground reading, manual ground balance knob, and adjustable tone breaks.

I'd also really like to see them bring back an improved XL Pro. The single biggest improvement they could make to the XL Pro would be adding a selectable manual ground balance like the 5900. They can take the opportunity to source new parts for the meter (lead-free), tweak the circuitry with upgraded components, and add a 4-tone adjustable Tone ID. Face it, the demographic of current detectorists is pretty old and nostalgic, but the upside is that White's could sell a bunch of upgraded traditional models. The solid performance of the upgraded models will slowly bring in new younger detectorists via word of mouth. Quit trying to dazzle, White's, just give us solid performance like you know how to do!

White's should build on their successes and stop trying to swing for the fences, they just need to try to hit some singles to stay in the game.
