what i think about the SEF 12"x15"

well today i had about 2 hours to hunt. I headed to a place that has been killed by detector for 25 years. i have hunted this spot more times than i can count.
every time i go there i always go between 2 trees that are about 7 feet apart cause years ago i found a 1917 merc deep down between them. well today like always i walked between the 2 trees just like i did 3 weeks ago with the pro coil. But today i got a signal. it actually startled me cause in my mind i absolutely knew there were no coins there anymore so the sudden sound of money was a surprise.
i checked the signal and it was sounding like a penny and reading a penny.
my settings and pattern are exactly the same as they were 3 weeks ago and even the moisture in the ground was almost the same. so i PP the target and it was about 8" down, nothing the pro coil should have missed.

i really still didn't think it was anything, i was thinking it was a false signal. you know how sometimes you get a false that sounds just like a coin and even pp like a coin. well i dug down and popped up a plug and there was a wheat penny laying there flat on the bottom of the plug. yea i know a wheat isn't much but what is amazing is how i could miss this penny all these years with all other detectors and even the etrac with the pro coil.
what is the SEF coil doing differently than the pro coil?

so later i walked over to a large oak that i had hunted around 3 weeks ago with the pro coil and had found a wheat next to it. I could still see were i had dug the last time i was there to get the wheat. I passed my coil over that and about 6 inches away i had a nickel signal. no way i said. I always focus on nickels hard when i hunt so i couldn't have missed this coin. But i said to myself aw its probably junk as i pp it. About 7" down in the hole was a 1952 nickel.

Both hunts i have had with the 12x15 sef have been in pounded hunted to death spots and in both places i have pulled wheats and nickels out. none of them were that deep. I have dug deeper coins with the pro coil but for some reason the pro coil missed these coins that were in its depth range. How can a much larger coil separate so much better than the stock pro coil?

OK i know this isn't a field test but i probably wont be using the pro coil anymore. i will get me a smaller SEF for trashy places and keep the 12x15 for deep stuff.

The pro coil is good and it found plenty that my other detectors missed but i think the SEF coil is better. Now that's my opinion and I'm not telling anyone that they should get one. this is just what i feel is best for me and how i hunt. Its my preference after using both coils.

I too have found great stuff with the 12x15 coil in areas I have pounded with the Pro coil. It hit on silver that...either I missed with the Pro coil or the Pro coil simply didn't hit on it. I don't know. Maybe the different design has something to do with it. I consider both coils to be excellent. It's always fun, though, to re-hunt an area with the big 12x15. :detecting:

Mine is on the E-trac ready to go, I'm heading out for few hours this weekend....can't wait to see how it performs.

Thanks rbholt, appreciate the update and information!!!

it is heavy but i think the trade off is worth it. i think in a few hunts i will not notice the weight. i think the perfect setup would be to have to the 6x8" and the 12x15".
im not sore this time around but i haven't hunted that long with the 12x15. il be able able to run it for 4 to 5 hours at a time im sure.
its like anything else in life if you want it bad enough you got to work for it and that goes for this coil. if you want the better separation and added depth it gives your just going to have to get use to it.
if you cant handle the weight then stick with the smaller size sef or the pro coil.

my homemade harness. Strap came off an old duffel pouch and the clips I found in a dumpster! I clip the strap onto my left-front belt loop (helps keep my pants up too) toss it across my back and over my right shoulder and clip the bungy attached to the detector into the ring on the end of the strap. Very quick and easy to take on and off if needed. The strap adjusts in length to get just the right balance. I've hunted for 10 hours straight with this setup with no arm fatigue.

I have the same setup! Works great.

I have the 10X12 SEF and I hunt with it only. I found the weight helps you swing slower which is what you need to do with a FBS detector.

yea the 12x15 makes me go very slow. you get that thing moving to fast you cant stop it lol maybe hit it against a tree to slow it down.

Is that coil a Coil Tec Coil??????? Thanks

im not sure who actually makes it but i think kellyco is who paid to have it produced. maybe one of the other folks here knows

Good report I'd say. I saw on the explorer forum that Bryce from IL felt the bigger 15 x 18 sef was a good one too.
He also told me he hunts exclusively with the 10 x 12 sef coil as an everyday coil and prefers it over the pro coil.
Looks like you have had the same reslults so there must be definite advantages to these sef's
Thank you for your unbiased opinion:thumbup:
