well today i had about 2 hours to hunt. I headed to a place that has been killed by detector for 25 years. i have hunted this spot more times than i can count.
every time i go there i always go between 2 trees that are about 7 feet apart cause years ago i found a 1917 merc deep down between them. well today like always i walked between the 2 trees just like i did 3 weeks ago with the pro coil. But today i got a signal. it actually startled me cause in my mind i absolutely knew there were no coins there anymore so the sudden sound of money was a surprise.
i checked the signal and it was sounding like a penny and reading a penny.
my settings and pattern are exactly the same as they were 3 weeks ago and even the moisture in the ground was almost the same. so i PP the target and it was about 8" down, nothing the pro coil should have missed.
i really still didn't think it was anything, i was thinking it was a false signal. you know how sometimes you get a false that sounds just like a coin and even pp like a coin. well i dug down and popped up a plug and there was a wheat penny laying there flat on the bottom of the plug. yea i know a wheat isn't much but what is amazing is how i could miss this penny all these years with all other detectors and even the etrac with the pro coil.
what is the SEF coil doing differently than the pro coil?
so later i walked over to a large oak that i had hunted around 3 weeks ago with the pro coil and had found a wheat next to it. I could still see were i had dug the last time i was there to get the wheat. I passed my coil over that and about 6 inches away i had a nickel signal. no way i said. I always focus on nickels hard when i hunt so i couldn't have missed this coin. But i said to myself aw its probably junk as i pp it. About 7" down in the hole was a 1952 nickel.
Both hunts i have had with the 12x15 sef have been in pounded hunted to death spots and in both places i have pulled wheats and nickels out. none of them were that deep. I have dug deeper coins with the pro coil but for some reason the pro coil missed these coins that were in its depth range. How can a much larger coil separate so much better than the stock pro coil?
OK i know this isn't a field test but i probably wont be using the pro coil anymore. i will get me a smaller SEF for trashy places and keep the 12x15 for deep stuff.
The pro coil is good and it found plenty that my other detectors missed but i think the SEF coil is better. Now that's my opinion and I'm not telling anyone that they should get one. this is just what i feel is best for me and how i hunt. Its my preference after using both coils.
