Why I wear boots in the water

tvr

Well-known member
Besides keeping the sand, gravel and shells out, finds like this one are why I wear boots. Dug this up today when about belly deep in the water. A lady who was nearby with two kids on boogie boards saw it come up and said she had no idea stuff like that was in the water and she would not want to step on it.

Boots for me Too!!!
I found this yesterday lurking just below the surface. Step on this and your going to need a tetanus shot for sure.
Hunting in dirt and sand, I make sure my tetanus shot is up to date, once every ten years. Just do it on the 50, 60 , 70, etc.... Nasty disease if you get it. Easily preventable. Why take a chance !!!

Safe hunting !!!

What amazed me was the lady's comment about not expecting to see anything like fishing equipment come up from the bottom when every morning at sunrise there are people all set up and surf fishing. Between 9 and 10 am the surf fishers leave when the beach starts to get crowded with the sunbathers.

Y'all's makin my toe nails curl.
Was detecting for a couple hours today. Waves in the three to four foot range still so I stayed to the sand and only got my ankles wet. Saw a guy fishing pull in a shark that was about 3 to 3 and a half feet long. He did the classic picture pose with a shark. Stood over it straddling it and holding its nose up while people took pictures of him holding the nose up showing all the teeth. After a few pictures he put it back in the water. I was looking for cuts in the water and not seeing any indicators that looked good. Hopefully the waves die down; then I'll get back in the water.

Seemed to push sand in and cover things up. Been up and down about 3 miles of beach and have not found a shell bottom, only sand. I did get a recent drop ring ... fairly big men's tungsten ring. In the water right on the top; one scoop.
Might try to get out later this week as the north winds are reported to have created a current parallel to the beach. There are swim warnings out about the current. That current might move some sand out.

I've found the same since Erin was here. When I searched the wet for 2 blocks using a PI and only got 1 signal at the end, I knew more sand had been dumped by the ocean.

Erin seemed to be more of a depositor than the stripper I had hoped, lol.

I recall a few years ago while my brother in law was at Myrtle beach, he stepped on a hook that was attached to a rig with other hooks and one had about a foot long dead shark hooked to it. He had to go to prompt care to have the hook removed!
I ran across a rig in the river recently that consisted of a couple of weights along with some type of float to keep tie bait off the bottom and the hooks were up high enough to snag someone’s leg as the floated by. Luckily I happened to spot the brightly colored float and placed in in my float tube until I finished detecting that day then discarded it in the trash.

I would never hunt beaches barefoot; I always wear either my diving booties or water shoes. And here's a good reason why. I found these nasty rusted barbs of twisted wire with super sharp pointy tips in dry sand several years ago. They were only a few inches deep and had been lying in the sand with their prongs up. Just think if someone in bare feet had stepped on these lovely metallic items.

PR TIP: I throw away all trash that I find but I specifically have kept these nasty barbs in my pouch ever since I found them. When someone comes up to chat, asks me if I found anything, I'll pull these out to show them what can lurk beneath the sand. Just a couple weeks ago, had a lady come up to chat, showed her these, she literally gasped and then thanked me profusely for making the beach safer. I'll also show these to the lifeguards and they're always very thankful that I found and removed those from the sand. One guard who thanked me said that I just saved him the trouble of having to deal with a potentially serious first aid situation.

About an hour later, that same lifeguard waved me to come over. When I got back over to his tower, he told me about a lady who reported losing her ring a day or so ago, then showed me by pointing where she had lost the ring. I searched the area he pointed out but wasn't able to find it, but it was cool that he waved me over to tell me about a lost ring. So, it never hurts to generate good PR for metal detecting with the lifeguards and beachgoers.
