Why would one want to have a sunray x1 probe..?

I am not sure if I have ever needed one. I seem to find what I am digging for. Isn't that what the detector is for? I need a good reason to buy one...yes I have dug some targets and lost it but not too many times...Is it really necessary to spend another couple of hundred for?
Looking for any response...Why is it such a rant and rave item to have? Do you, that have it, use it alot and why? and do you really think you could survive without it? If you loose target cause halo was broken...can't you just use pinpoint and get a signal? and keep digging?

Well there are many reasons to get one. But if you do not feel it necessary to have one. Then I do not feel it is my job to convince you to get one. It is your decision. I have never heard anyone complain after buying one is the only advice I will give you.

Must be your lucky day. I shipped my SE off to Minelab Thursday and my SE X1 probe is sitting on the kitchen counter with nothing to do. It's mounted to an SE upper shaft but those also fit the Explorer II.

I'll bring it along tomorrow in case you want to take it for a spin.

That said reason...

#1 Speed - I can recover a target and move on to the next much faster with the X1 probe. Less time spent chasing things around a hole or dirt pile = more time swinging the coil = more finds.

#2 Accuracy - Being one prone to multilating old silver and copper coins with my digger I now sneak up on my targets with the probe. Its rare that I put my digger into a find since buying the X1. Learning to pinpoint worth a damn also helped. :D

3# Iffy targets. A high percentage of my older finds are iffy signals. They can sound a lot like a rusty nail with low iron tones. When digging the worst of these one is not always rewarded with a good target but I am MUCH more likely to take a chance on these because I know I won't be wasting time chasing a nail. The X1 probe has the benefit of the Explorers tone ID so after a quick check I'm on to the next target in short order if I hear iron. Try that with any other brand probe.

4# Multiple Targets - This is not an every day event but its happened to me quite a few times. I get a decent signal, recover a coin. Sweep the hole with the big coil and hear nothing or iron. Check the hole with the X1 and the X1 says there's another coin down there! Once I dug an 1887 IH. Checked the hole with the X1 and thought it was picking up another coin or something, but it was pretty deep, X1 barely got a signal on it. Swept the hole with the stock coil, nothing but iron. Started to fill the hole in but then decided to hit it again with the X1. There's something down there dam it, I dig another 3 inche plug out of the bottom of the hole, flip it over and theres another 1887 IH with a SWEET e.g. XF/AU 1886 seated dime stuck to it!

#5 Speed 2 - Heres something I do quite often, nearly every hunt. Second to iffy targets are targets that are hiding in the shadow of nearby trash. I often think I hear a peep of a deeper coin near a more shallow trash or clad target but its too close to the shallow target to tell for sure let alone pinpoint. Again being one to mutilate finds if I'm not careful I go in with the X1 probe, get that trash or clad out of the way quick and give the area another sweep. I probably have a 70% success rate at this and theres nothing like taking home a keeper that was trying to hide. Trying to pinpoint the trash or clad with the stock coil is a pain, the deeper coin nearby pulls the pinpoint off center. Its just so much quicker with the X1 probe.

I'm completely spoiled now, I won't hunt without my X1.

I had a bunch of really knowledgeable Explorer users telling me to buy the X1 when I purchased my first Explorer. I didn't listen, I was hell bent on buying this big 15 inch WOT coil instead. It was June mind you, and hotter than hell out with humidity. OMG I about keeled over with heat stroke so many times from chasing rusty nails and coins to china in that heat only to find them in the side of the hole or give up altogether. I eventually purchased the X1 then proceded to kick myself for not buying one two months earlier.

Thanks for nothing......I wasn't looking to hire you for a job.....just want some good or bad input.....thats all....are you the king that ordered cams on every street corner of England?....Get a clue Bill! ReelectClinton~!!!!!

and it might go an inch and a half. The X-1 has a greater range. That difference goes back to not scratching a coin. With the Merlin I have scratched several coins which I have not done with the X-1. Besides I don't always trust the Merlin.

Also wearing a medical alert bracelet keeps me from holding the dirt under the coil to see if I can narrow down which hand the item is in.

I don't know how I got by without the X-1.

I agree with Charles - and since I got the sunray on my ex-II, life just became simpler. On my other machines which dont have a sunray probe, I take along a handheld pinpointer (vibra-probe 560), and will now be trying a newly purchased Uniprobe which has some depth to it. This dont mean that I will give up the vibra-probe 560, just adding another probe to the gang.

I too use a WOT and a Sun Ray 12 most of the time and the X1 really helps when you get into a deep hole. I have one on each of my EX-2's and wouldn't be with out it. For example yesterday I had a hole about 10 inches deep and pulled out a quarter. Shoved in the probe again and pulled another and another and another-total 6 quarters and 2 nickles.. without the probe I would have had a very big hole and spent a lot of time getting them all-might even have missed some .02

Lets face it even though I am accomplished at pinpointing with an Explorer and heck don't even use the pinpoint mode most concentric coils especially with VCO are much easier to pinpoint with accurately and some just need it for coins on the sides of the hole or perhaps locating the target in the large pile of dirt as deep targets equate to large piles of dirt. If you really need a pinpointer Sunray surely makes one of the best( well that cover the pros)
Here comes the cons Explorer is big and bulky as is and adding more just doesn't make sense to me and either does the price, but then again only get what you pay for.
Personally with practice not even using the pinpoint mode( sometimes I do for difficult target), but remember its all metal and powerful and a piece of junk next to the target can confuse you I usually can cut a 4 inch plug and be right on so I do carry a small inespensive pinpointing in my back pocket or pouch as I rarely use it and its easily carried.
I think its a matter of choice and although Sunray makes terrific products if you can pinpoint well perhaps you don't need one, but then again many do well with them so who am I to judge and again whater works

I read through the posts and didn't see one of the best reasons I like having the X-1 probe. Maybe I missed it and if I did excuse me for posting it again. I think one big advantage of having the X-1 probe is being able to switch coils in a matter of seconds. You'll have to buy an extra lower rod with each coil but it makes changing to another coil a snap.

Hope this helps.

When I first started detecting, I didn't use a probe at all, & I too questioned the use of one. But, ocassionally, you have that one target that you just can't seem to locate & it keeps you from having to pick up the detector everytime you want to rescan the hole or dirt pile. Also, the 1" probe can get in the hole when the larger coil cannot. After getting one & using it, I'm glad I did. Can I do without it? I suppose. It just depends on what you want to spend your money on.

In conclusion, I can say that it will save you time in locating your targets & being able to move on to the next one. Also, keeps you from having to get up & down to rescan a hole or dirtpile with the detector. If you can afford it, its worth the money.

When I tried to sell it, no one wanted it because the black lead was partly coiled. Apparently I purchased one of poor design. I don't know how many were made this way. I feel that it just adds weight and does not help me with pinpointing.

You will find targets more quickly, so you will have more finds in a given length of time.

You can pinpoint the targets location in the hole and avoid damaging your find (it works in pinpoint mode too).

Another great use is for those deep iffy iron/coin signals. Dig to the approximate depth - put the probe down there - it will null on iron almost every time and give you a great tone if in fact it is a coin.

I use the SR Probe on almost every target I dig. I guarantee you will not think it is wasted money after a few hunts.

To stoop to the level of name calling is real mature. Shows great intelligence and I can see why you need guidance. God bless you! And thank god I serve our country to protect your rights to say such disrespectful things. YOU ARE WELCOME

I have always managed without one of the clip on pinpointers no problem i think they are massively over priced. Its what i would call an expensive luxury. Any detector user who has dug hundreds or thousands of holes over the years should not need such a contraction as this stick on a rod pinpointer. A cheap pinpoint probe works just as well and does exactly what it says on the tin.

Cool, now to your question. I will answer why I think you should get the Sunray X-1 probe.
CONS first= 1. price 2. added weight to already hefty machine 3. you do not always need it. 4. if you forget to flip switch you are going to wonder what happened to all the signals =)

PROS 1. If you have ever had a target act like a metal snail and you just could not find it. 2. Ease of use(just flip switch) 3. Ease of swapping coils. 4. This pinpointer is in-line with your detector so you hear it through the headphones. 5. It does not interfere with machine(my vibra probe DID). THE BIGGEST REASON= now that I have mine I do not regret having it ever. If you decide to get a pin-pointer I strongly recommend the Sunray X1 probe
