It's been exactly one year and a day since I went to this particular spot to detect.
Last December 4, 2009 I hit this local old farm site, less than 10 minutes from my house and one of the last remaining farm sites anywhere around my area, to practice with my new 12x15 SEF and was amazed when I found a 1759 eight reales cut in half.
There is just so much garbage in this plowed field that you have to be prepared to load your pouch with very many crushed aluminum cans...we all know how they give that banging 12/41-43 signal - but after 2 shovels full and a target still in the hole at 9" - your hopes of finding something great start to fade....I've since come to know the owner of this farm and he doesn't allow anyone onto this property (after getting sued by someone once) but after explaining my Artifact Detecting Team project he agreed to allow me to detect. He mentioned that the area was a farm from the early 1700's and he had boxes of arrowheads that he's found along the way. So it looks like I'm the only person currently swinging there.
Because of the massive amount of junk and my access to the awesome detecting sites out in the Hampton's (where we do the ADT project) I really didn't need to get back onto this spot to detect. So without an ADT event scheduled for this weekend and with my wife having a "girl's thing" to do this afternoon I said what the heck and used the opportunity to spend a few hours at this local site.
About 30 minutes and 20 aluminum cans later I get a solid 12/42. One shovel full of the muddy dirt then a quick scan with the X-1 and I see the sight of small old silver...and it's a pretty sight to see...other than the hole she's a beauty (although I do like seeing them pre-1800). This is my first half reale. All I need now is a two and a four reale to complete my collection of the complete range.
I guess I'll need to continue to go back there and keep cleaning out that trashy site...
Good luck and HH.
