Should I Get A 10"x12" SEF?

I now have a 4.5"x7" Xcelerator, a Minelab 8" Slimline Tornado and the stock 11" coils for my E-Trac. I have been playing with the idea of getting a 10"x12" SEF as well but I can't make up my mind. For those that have one of these, would you recommend me adding one to my arsenal or do you think I have my bases covered with what I currently have? I really like the stock coil on this machine, and I like the smaller coils to sift through the trash, but I have heard so many good things about the 10x12 SEF that I can't stop thinking about it. If you have one, please let me know what you think and why, I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much. HH -Marc

I've had both (Actually tried two different Pro Coils). If you already have the Pro Coil the 10x12 does not perform much differently. IMO the 10x12 is a little more stable, but not quite as sensitive to very small targets. Coverage of the 10x12 is a little better, but it's also heavier and a bit more awkward to use in long grass/brush. My main reason for keeping the SEF over the Pro Coil was the paper thin tabs on the Pro Coil look like they could snap off at any minute :yikes:

If you're considering an SEF, you may want to try the 12x15. It's been a killer coil for me and covers opens areas in a hurry.

Have you thought about the Sun-Ray X-12? I have one and it is a very good coil. If you have'nt read Bryce Brown's reviews on different coils go to the Explorer forum and he has a multitude of information on all the most popular coils. I agree with ZOFCHAK on the Pro-Coil and theSEF 10X12. BUT it's your money and they want it now. Good luck with your choice. HH :minelab:

No point in getting the 10x12 in addition to the the pro coil in my "opinion" formulated by many hours of infield use with both. Now the 12x15 is the ticket to go with the selection you have.It is very nice for more open areas and is a killer on deep on edge coins.

Thank you all so much for your information. I guess I already have what I want then. The 12x15 seems a bit big. I am a slow mover and slow swinger and so I really don't need anything bigger, nor do I need to be able to cover more ground. I would consider my stye of hunting more as "sniping." I take my time and snail my way through hunted out areas and pick up the leftovers from the guys that went through at 100mph. I, for some reason, was under the impression that the 10x12 SEF was a better "sniper" coil than the stock pro coil, guess I was wrong. If I do end up getting into some open areas, I will definitely get the 12x15 SEF and give it a try. I really appreciate all your help everyone, you are awesome, and you just saved me about $200, THANK YOU!!! Happy Hunting and thanks again. -Marc

I have a 10x12 sef butterfly coil. I love hunting with it. Is it better than my Pro coil? Not much better. However it does go a bit deeper here in Ohio soil, has killer separation and is more stable...especially with higher levels of manual sensitivity. It hits better on nickels and indians - especially deeper ones. The downside is its weight. It's noticeably heavier than the Pro coil. I tend to look at them as different coils instead of competing coils. Consequently, I hunt with both of them. If I have a long day of hunting ahead of me, I'll use my Pro coil. It's lighter and I can hunt with it longer. There have been days when the 10x12 wore out my 49-year old right arm. Because the Pro coil was calibrated to the E-trac, the depth meter is more accurate than with the 10x12. Any time you use a bigger (or smaller) coil, the depth meter will be off just a bit. In my opinion you can't go wrong with either coil. I love hunting parks with the 10x12 coil - especially parks I've hunted to death with my Pro coil. It seems the 10x12 hits on some targets I either missed with the Pro coil...or the Pro didn't give me a signal I would consider...dig-able. And, I must add, that is the benefit of the Pro coil too. They are two different coils and compliment one another nicely. (I also have the 8x6 and 15x12 sef coils. I like them too.)

I have a 10x12 sef butterfly coil F/S right now in the Detector Accessories Classified Forum if your interested.

I'm using the Sunray-X12 when not using my 6x8.

When it hits, it hits hard, and is pretty easy to pinpoint.

It is heavier than the stock coil so you need a bungee harness for all day or just work out more.

OhioCoinHunter - That's a great review you posted on the 10 x 12 S.E.F. and Pro Coils !

I have a 10 x 12 S.E.F. - I really like it - yes, it's noticeable heavier - if I remember right it's appox. 4 oz. heavier than the Pro Coil - but it also has a real nice solid feel to it !

Here's a link to Bryce Brown's reviews on different coils that he's tested - (Bryce is the Moderator of the Findmall - Minelab Explorer forum) - this post has had over 11,000 hit's !

Good Luck !

I think that perhaps the 12x10 might make a big difference on a Sovereign but I don't find there to be much difference between the Pro Coil and the 10x12 SEF on the E-TRAC. That 15x12 might be nice to try in some soft low mineral and low trash soil. I keep a 6x8 on a different detector (one that is made in Oregon) but I keep the Pro coil on the E-TRAC.

Thank you all for your input. I think I will stick to the pro coil, 8" tornado and 4.5x7 xcelerator for the time being. I thought the 10x12 sef might be a much better addition than it seems to be. I think I will continue as I have been and wait until someone raves about something in the future before changing anything. Thanks again for all your replies! HH -Marc
