    My biggest coin find ever!

Ten years later, this thread needs pics or it didn't happen!

    Tot Lot finds

What a lovely December 1st here today! Sandy was busy with Christmas Cards. My penmanship sucks, so I don't even get asked to help, lucky me! Feeling that luck on my side, I made a trip to the schoolyard playground. Lately the finds have been slim, but I've done a good service by removing some...

    My biggest coin find ever!

Unusual for a Centennial quarter to be so clean. Found it in a gopher mound. Very impressive, don't you think? -Ed

"Native" iron, any relation to gold deposits?

Hi Steve, Here's one for you that's been puzzling me for some time. I've been discovering these little patches of so-called native iron on my property and also in a fairly wide area around where I live. These grade from black sands upwards to slaty bits and larger chunks with a weak magnetic...

    Unfired Dixie 50-70 cartridge

I found this yesterday just off a gravel road. It's for a Civil War era Spencer, near as I can figure. It gave a pulltab signal but with a more stable ID, so I dug it. Looks to have been buried at least a few years. Sure is a honkin' big bullet! I'm guessing it's probably fairly recent, since...

    Visualizing a coil's detection field

Coils will be coils. Three decades of detecting has at least taught me that much! :detecting: I've also noticed that detectable objects might be anything at any depth. Wow, who knew! :surprised: What we can't "see" is the energy emitted by our detector's coil, any more than we can view the...

Things you learn with air testing

And it's good to review what you thought you remembered! On a whim, I went way back to the first T2 forum pages, page 185 in 2006. Reading some of them got me to wondering, so I idly powered up my T2 and checked the various menus and settings. One thing led to another as I realized how much...

    My Bounty Hunter info online

Ever since buying a First Texas DX8500 back in '81, I've collected a lot of info on metal detectors, especially those made by First Texas/Bounty Hunter/Teknetics, including models sold through Radio Shack and other outlets. Some of it goes back to the 1970's, when Bounty Hunter was owned by PNI...

    Visualizing coil detection area

I guess I've been thinking about coils lately! It came to me that I could use an LED to get a time-exposure image of the shape of a coil's detection field. My digital camera allows long time-exposures, so I set it for 20 or 30 seconds at f8 (manual focus and exposure) in a darkened room and...

Inside the 4" BH nugget coil

Took a hacksaw blade and cut just through the case, then popped it open and picked out the foam. I scraped off some insulation to trace the wiring. What gets me are the little, loose-wound "tuning" loops and loose wad of wire in the center. I had two coils, so why not? :D -Ed

Time Ranger general coinshooting and prospecting tips

Another post from my archives, enjoy! -Ed From a perpetual newbie to other newbies, or Getting Started with the Time Ranger My wife, Sandy, and I bought a pair of Time Rangers in the summer of 2001, and we have found that they do tell us what is going on with most targets. Metal detectors...

Detector Tech - Battery useage tests

I was digging around in my computer's Bounty Hunter Folder and came across this article I wrote in 2001 about how to save on batteries. Thinking I'd submit it to a treasure magazine, like many other unfinished projects, I never got around to actually sending it in. It should probably be updated...

    Time Ranger mods

My wife, Sandy and I own a couple earlier Time Rangers. We discovered that there is a small but constant drain on the batteries, due to the "soft" power switch. A tiny portion of the circuitry is always on, waiting for you to press the power button. In about a month's time, it would be enough to...

more fun with the R6 T2

Today I hit my two "problem" sites where electrical interference made it difficult or near-impossible to hunt. I'm happy to report the issue is now mostly moot. At startup, the interference is still there at these locations, but choosing the quietest frequency (F2 for me), upping the disc just...

R6 T2 is in the house!

A busy day! While the T2 arrived back today, my priorities were upgrading my computer so I could run my new tax software. I did unpack the T2 and buzzed through a quick rundown of the new modes, but then it was back to business. That done, I checked out the Findmall chatroom, as my computer...
